Fallout 76 is playing host to a dedicated community of roleplayers who’ve formed elaborate factions and a storyline better than the one in the game.

Players are coming together to invent their own lore in Fallout 76. Bethesda’s controversial online RPG has been chugging along since its unquestionably disastrous launch in 2018. The loyal players that have stuck with the game since then have been rewarded through numerous content updates; the most recent one, Steel Dawn, introduced classic Fallout faction the Brotherhood of Steel to the game.

It’s bound to surprise some people that Fallout 76 still has a player base. Its launch in 2018 made constant headlines, and never for any good reasons. Players found the online RPG to be a dreadfully buggy mess when it launched, and were underwhelmed by the game’s content even when it functioned. Further controversies erupted concerning various special editions of the game, most notoriously one which was set to release with a special canvas bag. Upon receiving their bags, fans were disappointed and outraged to learn that the bags were made of plastic, and that the canvas versions were reserved for influencers. In short, Fallout 76 and everything it touched were reviled by the community, and even Todd Howard himself has admitted that it let people down.

But some people have stuck with the game in spite of all these issues, and these people have found an intricate way of finding their own fun in the controversial title. As Polygon reports, these fans have formed a massive and elaborate RP community, with multiple faction, large scale border disputes, allegiances, assassination attempts, and even a trial for a notorious raider boss. This group is even building on existing Fallout lore to form these communities; for instance, the Enclave, who served as the main antagonists in Fallout 3, are represented by players in Fallout 76. Every conflict that takes place in this RP space is discussed in-depth out of character as well, to make sure all players understand and respect the new reality of this shared space based on whatever developments unfold in RP. For instance, raider boss The Warlord was recently incarcerated for his crimes, and even though the player portraying him is still active in the community, he has agreed not to participate in any fights, since that would break the continuity of the storyline.

The biggest obstacle to these factions’ business is, understandably, Fallout 76 itself. Namely the game’s PVP gameplay, which is still barely functional. To quote The Warlord himself, “There are multiple severe bugs and glitches in PvP that have been around for months, in some cases over a year, that Bethesda seems unable or unwilling to fix.” Since PVP fights can have tremendous ramifications for the lore the fans’ are putting together, it’s pretty disruptive when normal weapons suddenly deal no damage, or, worse, instantly kill players. It’s so bad that some faction leaders are actually looking for alternatives to settling their in-lore conflicts.

Fallout 76 has a surprisingly rich RP history; some fans have even formed an in-character “aristocracy” based around premium content ownership. This aristocracy was clearly formed as a joke, however, while these ongoing faction wars have clearly had a lot of work put into them. It’s surprising to see such dedicated and in-depth coordination efforts revolving around what is essentially a work of fanfiction. One hopes that Bethesda realizes how devoted a fanbase it has in the form of people who are willing to invent their own lore and go to this much effort to enforce it. Hopefully these fans will be rewarded someday with a better version of Fallout 76.
