GTA: San Andreas has been ported for the PS Vita and we will just have to go ahead and assume that this bit of news happens to be something you’ve been waiting on for a while. As luck would have it, modders have picked up the ball Sony dropped where the handheld console is concerned and have been porting GTA games to the device.

The PSP had a pretty good lifespan and the fact that the Rockstar titles were available likely contributed to its success. The Vita, on the other hand, didn’t fare so well so it stands to reason that the lack of the popular GTA iterations had something to do with it.

The likes of GTA 3 and GTA Vice City are games to have come to the Vita thanks to hackers but the arrival of San Andreas is likely to eclipse all of that as it remains one of the favorite GTA games of all time. A recent survey pointed out the 2004 title is the game most fans want to see remastered. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is leaving remaster decisions to Rockstar but claims to be encouraged by gamers wanting to see old GTA titles remade.

Many harbor hopes over San Andreas getting remade in future and the desire could prompt Rockstar to go in such a direction. A San Andreas remaster is now rumored to be in the works (ah shit, here we go again…) but, in the meantime, you could get the game on your PS VITA if it’s modded. There’s no reason not to get your device modded given Sony giving up on the mini console and ceasing production.

PSP and PS Vita hacker TheFlow released a GTA: San Andreas port for the latter following the launching of ports for the aforementioned GTA 3 and Vice City – it has also been highlighted in a video by MVG (seen below). You’d also need the original files from the game’s Android port to get it to work. All the files and instructions you need to get San Andreas up and running on your PS Vita system could be accessed here.

The port comes with custom patches such as:

– Fixed camera controls for flying vehicles (including the Hydra jet)

– Fixed broken facial expressions

– Fixed cheats hash key table

– Removed specular lighting on pedestrians

– Added PS2-like rendering

It’s made functional by means of loading the official Android ARMv7 executable file in memory, resolving its imports with native functions and then patching.

PC cheats can be executed by pressing L+SELECT to open the on-screen keyboard and a list could be found here.
