Warning: Spoilers ahead for F9!

F9 takes Dominic Toretto’s heroism to a new level, completing his mythic transformation into a Fast & Furious superhero. Vin Diesel has been the face behind the character for twenty years, making his debut as Dom in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. After sitting out of the sequel and limiting his Tokyo Drift involvement to a cameo, Diesel returned to The Fast Saga, serving as a central character since 2009’s Fast & Furious. While Dom’s morals were in question during early installments, there’s no doubt which side he’s fighting for now.

When Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) first met Dom, the intimidating Toretto was the leader of a group of street racers. Aside from dominating the Los Angeles street racing scene, Dom and his crew were carrying out a crime spree, hijacking trucks to steal electronics. Dom was on the run from authorities for a time, but he was eventually caught while helping Brian take down a Mexican drug lord, Arturo Braga (John Ortiz). Dom’s crew broke him free, and though he was still considered a criminal, his targets began leaning into corrupt businessmen and terrorists, putting him on good graces with government agencies.

After aligning his group with figures like Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), Dom began embracing his role as a “good guy.” In time, Dom slowly transformed into a superhero-like figure in the Fast & Furious franchise, with F9 completing his metamorphosis. Not only does Dom show up for every mission, no matter how dangerous, but he continues to show no hesitation despite the stakes. In F9, Dom is focused on stopping his brother Jakob (John Cena), but more importantly, the team is focused on preventing Jakob’s associates from using Project Ares to hack into weapons systems, which would have dire effects across the globe. During Dom’s faceoff with the new group of villains, the character proves why he deserves the title of superhero.

In a way, Dom is like Batman without the suit. He unlimited access to vehicles, weapons, gadgets, and supplies across the globe, thanks in part to his loyal associates. More than anything, however, Dom has a selfless superhero mentality. In the past, Dom seemed to only care about saving himself and his close friends. Now that he has a son, Dom makes more of an effort to save the world from dangerous figures like Mose Jakande (Djimon Hounsou), Cipher (Charlize Theron), and Jakob’s associate, Otto (Thue Ersted Rasmussen). It’s as if Dom knows he will never be able to rest until the threats are eliminated, a common side effect of being a superhero.

There’s also the fact that Dom has a habit of steering into danger, figuratively and literally. As The Fast Saga goes on, installments feature stunts that are wilder and wilder in nature. F9 takes the level of action sequences to yet another level, thrusting Dom and his group into situations that include racing over a minefield, taking out an armored Mercedes-Benz Unimog with magnetized cars, and something that fans have been waiting for: The Fast Saga’s first trek into space travel. Dom has become such a hero that he can now catch a falling Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) with the hood of his car or get them to safety by hitting a cable at the right spot, so it slingshots them over a body of water.

To further prove Dom’s superhero transformation in F9, the movie insinuates the character is basically immortal. The cable stunt left Letty and Dom tumbling in the car, but they both come out unscathed. Later, Dom battles a horde of Otto’s soldiers by himself, using his brute strength to take them all out. He also fights his brother one-on-one, breaking through walls, resulting in just a few scratches. Dom then bravely remains in the Unimog to fully stop Otto and Cipher’s efforts, using the crashing armored vehicle to destroy Cipher’s jet before rolling out of the explosion predominantly unharmed. While Diesel is known for playing Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks like the actor has been portraying another hero this entire time.
