This year, SNL was finally able to return to semi-normal broadcasting in the studio instead of the at-home style sketches that the cast was uploading during the height of quarantine. With the return to its original format, SNL has celebrated the return of celebrity hosts on the show.

There have been some incredible hosts in 2021, and reality star Kim Kardashian was even featured in one week’s show–and did surprisingly well! It was a telling sign of how much good quality fans got from these hosts this past year.

10 Kim Kardashian

It’s no secret that Kim Kardashian is not an actress–or a comedian for that matter. However, her SNL episode had some great moments and she was able to hold her own with the seasoned show regulars. Some think this is even how she and Pete Davidson started their romance.

Kardashian didn’t stutter or forget any of her lines, which is more than some more experienced hosts can say for themselves. She even poked a bit of fun at her problematic ex, Kanye West, in her monologue and garnered some good laughs from the audience. While she wasn’t the most expressive, her sketches were funny, especially the music video about moms going to the club and falling asleep.

9 Jonathan Majors

Jonathan Majors, known for The Harder They Fall and Loki, hosted an episode this fall and had a wonderful show. The actor had good chemistry with the rest of the cast and they all worked really well together as a team.

His episode had some hilarious sketches, including Majors and Keenan Thompson hosting a show where parents tell creepy stories about their kids, and an award show for audacious advertisements. He was a complete natural in the comedic genre and shined onscreen.

8 Dan Levy

Dan Levy has spent years making audiences laugh with and relate to his character David’s good and bad traits on Schitt’s Creek. He had an equally easy time getting laughter from the live studio audience for his SNL performance.

It was just after the height of quarantining in America, so the show still had some kinks to work out, but Levy got into all of his different roles in the sketches and did a flawless job. He even sang a bit on the show and sounded great to the point where he should definitely try to work in some more music into his career.

7 Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is an acting veteran, starring in films like Promising Young Woman, Drive, and The Great Gatsby. While she has years of experience mastering serious dramatic roles, her comedy resume is not nearly as extensive.

That’s why it was additionally impressive that she did so well on SNL during her episode. Her sketch about lesbian historical dramas was amazing and the ad for the fake IBS medicine Tremfalta was absolute comedy gold. She also starred in one of the best skits from season 46, “Study Buddy.”

6 Regé-Jean Page

Fresh off of Bridgerton’s immense success, heartthrob Regé-Jean Page came to New York City to host the show. They even did a Bridgerton-inspired sketch on the show about some bizarre sex scene coordinators. The audience cheered when the writers worked “I burn for you” into the script, which is one of the show’s most memorable quotes.

Page, like Mulligan, does not do a lot of comedy acting. But, it’s something he should seriously consider, as his comedic timing and demeanor were so natural on the show. Other favorite sketches featured Page interviewing for an advertising company with horribly crude spec ads and singing Olivia Rodrigo in a bar with his buddies.

5 Simu Liu

Simu Liu changed the game by becoming the first Asian superhero to be featured in their own film. To cement himself as a celebrity presence, he hosted SNL and did a fantastic job. For a first-time host and decently new star, Liu had a lot of pressure on him but was able to be at home on the SNL set.

It’s a special talent to be able to play the “straight man” and the “funny guy” well, and Liu was able to execute both parts. He casually tried to guess whether or not people were Republicans on a game show, and then belted out Backstreet Boys at a karaoke bar.

4 Regina King

Unlike some of the other celebrities on this list, Regina King has done quite a bit of comedic acting in her career. Her expertise and composure really shined through when she was hosting the show. She did a myriad of characters, from a horny dating show contestant to a low-cost attorney for Gorilla Glue cases.

King also had some of the most hilarious sketches of the season during her episodes and that added to the overall quality of the episode. She was part of FemBox, an adult feminist poetry group speaking at a school assembly, and the only way they altered their poetry was by changing the word “vagina” to “elbow.”

3 Paul Rudd

Paul Rudd made SNL history this past weekend by joining the Five Timer’s Club. The show honored him with guest appearances by the likes of Tina Fey and Tom Hanks, and gifted Rudd with the Five Timer’s Club robe during his opening monologue.

Although the show had a different format because of a recent rise in COVID cases, it was still an amazing episode with a ton of great moments. From a futuristic black and white sketch with Pete Davidson to an ad for HomeGoods, Rudd made it work for this episode. Plus, the audience got to take a look back at some of the other Five Timer’s favorite sketches.

2 Maya Rudolph

It’s really special when SNL brings back a former regular to host the show after they leave the core cast. Maya Rudolph was on the show from 2000 to 2007, coming back to host the first time in 2012, and again this year.

Rudolph was born to be a comedic actor. She can improv well, gives great line delivery, and is one of the best celebrity impersonators. Her episode had her doing her infamous Beyoncé impression to be a guest on the popular internet show Hot Ones, and reprising her role as Lady Vice President, Kamala Harris.

1 Jason Sudeikis

Jason Sudeikis has the rare gift of effortless comedic acting. Viewers would never guess that it’s been years since Sudeikis was a regular on the show, as he’s immediately comfortable in the SNL studio.

He had audiences dying laughing as he shamelessly hit on a mom during a parent-teacher conference, and he reprised his role as Vance, the red-tracksuit-clad dancer in Keenan Thompson’s “What’s Up With That” sketch. Overall, it was by far the best hosting job of the year.
