Fantasy Flight Games’ hybrid dice and card game, Star Wars: Destiny, has given us one last swansong in the form of some print and play cards and instructions.

It was announced earlier this year that Star Wars Destiny was to be discontinued after its 8th expansions Covert Missions. This troubled expansions had already been delayed from its original launch in October 2019, only to be delay again in January pushing it back into March. And that was it, or so we thought.

Star Wars Destiny is a popular game and has seen competitive play tournaments around the world, so it was a strange decision by FFG to cancel the game with so much of the universe left to explore. It isn’t the only Star Wars card game to fade away and be one with The Force. Two previous collectible card games have existed before. Riding off the wave of Magic: The Gathering, Decipher Inc released Star Wars: Customizable Card Game in 1995. This ran until 2001 when they lost the license to print the card game to Wizards of the Coast. Again, it was a popular game and saw 11 full expansions.

Star Wars: The Trading Card game was release by WotC in April 2002 and ran until 2005. It too saw several expansion sets over its relatively short life. The bug-bear held by many games at the time was two card games with a similar collecting gimmick using two completely different rule sets.

Star Wars Destiny saw FFG return to the world of collectible card games, but this time there was a new mechanic – the hybridization of cards and dice. The format proved popular with nine full sets released over the lifetime. An unreleased 10th set was due to be awarded to each participant of a final special Star Wars: Destiny tournament earlier this year. It was tied to the Echoes of Destiny kit that would have been sent to retailers. Due to the COVID-19 world pandemic, plans were put on hold and no date has been given for when this will now happen.

The print and play cards appeared on the Star Wars: Destiny product page without much fanfare. A single tweet was made and gave us some details on what to expect. Visiting the Star Wars Destiny page and under “Print-and-Play Cards,” the new set called Transformations can be download. It features 12 double-sided cards showing transformations between major characters, places, or events. We have farmboy Luke transforming to Jedi Luke, Alive Obi-Wan to Ghost Obi-Wan, and regular Han to Popsicle Han.
