It’s always nice to see media break stereotypes and let two female love interests get along instead of forcing them into some contrived rivalry. This is probably what the writers of Final Fantasy VII Remake were going for when they erased the slight tension Tifa and Aerith had over Cloud in favor of a pure and sincere camaraderie.

It’d be easy to say that they seem to be very good friends and attribute that to how women generally find each other easy to get along with. One could even say that their immediate progression from first meeting to holding hands is because girls can be touchy with each other without anyone making a big deal out of it.

But that’s boring. So we’re gonna make a big deal out of it and give you their top five gayest moments, in chronological order.

[Spoilers for the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake]

5 Beating Down Corneo’s Lackeys

Nothing says romance like instant chemistry upon meeting— nothing except for instant battle chemistry upon meeting and beating the ever loving crap out of four assholes together. It takes Aerith and Tifa all of maybe fifteen minutes to go from their first meeting to curb-stomping Corneo’s goons in perfect sync.

There’s a certain sapphic je-ne-sais-quoi to the way Tifa yells “get down!” before roundhousing the bastard coming at Aerith: perhaps it’s the protectiveness on Tifa’s part, or the absolute lack of hesitation on Aerith’s.

Regardless, it’s undeniable that their first real moment together is charged with chemistry. Tifa’s only human: who wouldn’t fall in love with this smile?

4 That Whole Sewer Section

It’s hard to pick one moment from this section because all of it is just filled with Aerith and Tifa hitting it off immediately. They’ve known each other for maybe half an hour, but they’re getting along like a blind date gone perfect.

For example: when a makeshift bridge starts sinking under Aerith, Tifa reaches out for her and pulls her into an embrace at the same time that Aerith grabs on and jumps into her arms.

Five minutes later, they literally ask each other out on a date.

3 The Train Graveyard

Nothing like a good spooky setting to get the romantic tension going, right? Aerith’s first impulse upon being confronted with the massive ghost is to call for Tifa and shield her with her own body.

Later, when they find Aerith after she’s kidnapped by the ghosts, it’s Cloud who grabs her out of the way of harm; but he isn’t the one who gives her a gentle smile and says “we found you” in the most tender voice, nor the one Aerith replies “I guess you did” to in an equally fond manner.

2 Defying Fate

This is the crowning moment of the romance between them: when they’re standing in Aerith’s old quarters in the Shinra laboratory, she admits that she feels like she’s “lost in a maze and every step takes [her] further from the path,” and that the Whispers keep taking away parts of herself. They then surround her and trap her in a mini-vortex— just before Tifa grabs her hand and pulls her out.

This is the first time we’ve seen a character able to resist a violent flow of Whispers— they’ve served as impenetrable walls at previous points in the game. And yet, Tifa reaches through the cage of literal and metaphorical Destiny — the embodiment of the entrapment and helplessness Aerith just confessed to feeling — to pull her out as the tender music swells and say:

“It’s okay. We’ll find a way out together.”

This is poetic cinema. This, here, is the singular most romantically charged moment of the entire game.

1 Two Gals, Sitting In The Front Seat, Zero Feet Apart Because They’re Totally Gay

That’s it. That’s the entry. We don’t have to explain the inherent homoromanticism of two girls sitting in a pickup truck together while the slightly butcher one drives.

Honorable Mention: From a Florist To A Bartender

This isn’t technically a gay moment between them, as it precedes their meeting— but we’d like to insist that it’s an essential part of their love story. Just think about it: a flower carrying a girl’s tender sentiment travels on the proxy of a boy’s chest to reach another girl and light up her world, even if just by a bit.

That’s some ancient love story from Lesbos or Sir Gawain And The Green Knight levels of displaced homoromanticism.

(And that’s not even mentioning Marlene’s declaration that Aerith “smells like our flower” upon meeting her in Seventh Heaven, Tifa’s bar.)

This list is not comprehensive, unfortunately— cataloguing every tender moment between them would simply drop-kick this article’s word count into orbit, so we’ll leave it here. But rest assured— if there was a moment we didn’t mention that you thought was gay, you’re absolutely correct. And if you didn’t think there were gay moments at all but have now opened your eyes, you’re very welcome.
