Countless wild predictions are made during the build to any Direct, but not many people will have had a Chocobo Racing revival on their Nintendo bingo cards.

The beginning of this week’s Nintendo Direct might have had some watching a little worried. It quickly started to become a platform to announce announcements. First, the reveal that Smash Ultimate’s final fighter won’t be revealed until next month, and then a date for Animal Crossing’s first-ever Direct to add to your calendars.

The Direct did eventually include some concrete information though of course, including a few things that no one could have ever seen coming. That included Chocobo Racing, a kart game that looks a lot like Mario Kart but includes characters from across the Final Fantasy series. The game is a spiritual successor to Chocobo Racing, another kart game that took inspiration from its competitors that launched on PS1 in 1999.

The focus is, of course, on a Chocobo in the trailer above. However, other characters confirmed for Chocobo GP include Shiroma and Vivi. There will also be plenty of Final Fantasy-inspired courses, including one in the trailer that looks all too reminiscent of Rainbow Road. The multiple iterations of the iconic track throughout the years in Mario Kart already give us nightmares.

You’ll race against other Final Fantasy characters, either offline or online, using abilities to take them out in your attempts to finish first. While it does look and sound a lot like Mario Kart, what Chocobo GP will offer that Mario Kart doesn’t is online tournaments. Competitions filled with as many as 64 racers will take place. Although that many racers on one track at the same time sounds chaotically entertaining, we assume those 64 competitors will be split into eight groups of eight with the winners qualifying for an eight-person final.

No specific release date was given for Chocobo GP during the Direct. Just that it will be coming to Switch in 2022. There was also no mention of whether it will be available on other platforms. Since Final Fantasy isn’t a Nintendo-owned series or even one that tends to favor Nintendo, it seems unlikely that Chocobo GP will be a Switch exclusive.
