SumoBots Battle Royale is basically the video game equivalent of Battle Bots.

From the minds of Finnish game developer/video streaming service provider Surrogate comes Sumobots Battle Royale. As the name suggests, this is a game where robots will face off in an attempt to reign victorious in combat. It also combines the greatest aspects of human culture into a single pack: sumo wrestling, battle royale, and robots.

This is no mere game. Instead of controlling virtual avatars, in SumoBots Battle Royale, you control real-life robots via the magic of the internet. The game client puts you in control of one out of six robots, each trying to push the other off the arena floor to secure victory. If you’re the last robot standing, you win.

You can download the game client for free via Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for Mac and PC. What you’ll see is a live-feed stream of the battleground and each of the competitors. When the game starts, you’ll gain control of your robot with one goal in mind: be the last bot standing.

SumoBots has certainly taken inspiration from classic live-action robot combat shows like BattleBots and Robot Wars. Instead of trying to outright destroy everyone else, you’re merely pushing them around a bit. From the trailer, it appears like every robot is the same model with different branding (depending on which e-sports team is sponsoring that particular robot).

Here’s where it becomes battle royale. The arena is made up of 17 modular blocks that fall away as the game progresses. The longer each match goes on -and the fewer opponents are left-, the smaller the arena gets. This mimics the battle royale format of a shrinking playing field and ensures that the action stays red hot throughout the fight.

There are currently 6 robots each identifying with a different e-sports team: The Alliance, Excel Esports, Team Heretics, ENCE, Team Empire, and Mousesports. When a certain team’s robot wins, that team gets a point. At the end of the season, the team with the most points wins and gets to rebrand the arena with their own special livery.

It’s not quite clear by the trailer what happens when a bunch of people tries to play the game at the same time. Maybe it’s first-come-first-served or uses a crowd-control system sort of like a “Twitch Plays” stream. Either way, it looks to be an exciting way to watch robots be violent.
