Spoilers For Final Fantasy VII Remake Ahead!

Final Fantasy VII Remake retells the story of the Midgar section of Final Fantasy VII. A lot of the boss monsters are the same as the original game, but the fact that Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action RPG means that they work in a totally different way. There are also new boss monsters that have been added to the story.

The story mode bosses in Final Fantasy VII Remake can be really challenging, which is why The Gamer has created this helpful guide for taking down each of the most challenging enemies in the game.

Guard Scorpion

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

The Guard Scorpion battle is identical to the one from the demo. The Guard Scorpion is incredibly agile and it’s weak to lightning, so switch to Barret to pile on the damage and stagger it. When the Guard Scorpion uses its barrier, it will become immune to lightning damage. In order to bring down the barrier, the player will need to aim for the field generator at its back. Once the Guard Scorpion is crippled, aim for its legs to bring it down.

Roche

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

You don’t have to worry about healing, as Roche pulls a Rubicante from Final Fantasy IV and heals Cloud before the fight. Roche can use both melee attacks and spells. He is weak to fire, but the easiest way to stagger him is by switching to Punisher mode and counterattacking his physical blows. Blocking Roche’s attacks in Operator mode will also leave him defenseless for a few seconds.

Crab Warden

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

The Crab Warden is weak to lightning magic. Attacking its body parts (like its legs) will quickly fill up the stagger meter. Once it has taken enough damage, it will connect to the railway tracks and summon some drones, which the player needs to deal with straight away. Once it has taken enough damage it will bring out its missile launchers and electrify the floor. Keep an eye on the ground and move to safe areas to avoid being shocked. When the pilot becomes exposed, hit it to expose the generator and keep striking that until the battle ends.

Airbuster

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

The Airbuster can be weakened if the player searches for keycards in the previous area. It’s weak to lightning attacks. During phase one of the battle, make sure to keep avoiding its laser and switch to the other characters to change its focus. During the second phase, destroy one of its detached hands as soon as possible. Once it flies off the edge, switch to Barret and wail on it from aware. When it moves close, switch to Cloud & Tifa. It really helps to link Lightning & Elemental Materia and give it to Barret for this battle.

Reno

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Take out the guards as soon as possible. Magic and lightning have little effect on Reno’s stagger gauge, so focus on physical attacks. Like Roche, Reno is susceptible to Punisher mode counters. Dodge his lightning attacks, as they can leave Cloud stunned for a few seconds. When Reno throws out his EMP mines, destroy them as soon as possible before returning to Reno.

Rude

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Make sure to enter this battle with Wind Materia, as Aero spells will fill Rude’s stagger gauge up extremely quickly. Use Aerith’s Pray ability to keep the team alive. The Punisher mode counters are useful against his regular attacks, but Rude’s grappling special moves can bypass them, so don’t rely on them for the whole battle.

Hell House

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Hell House is easily the hardest boss in the game up to this point, so don’t be afraid to use elixirs or your best items if you need them. The player absolutely needs to enter the battle with a Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Wind Materia equipped across Aerith and Cloud. Hell House has a barrier switch ability and the player needs to hit the barrier with the opposing spell to fill the stagger gauge.

When Hell House uses its God House Mode, the stagger gauge won’t fill up as much, but it will fill up a lot more during the brief period after the mode ends, so just play defensively until it drops its guard. If it grabs a party member, switch to the other character to heal as soon as possible.

Abzu 1

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Abzu is weak to fire magic, but this won’t affect its stagger gauge much. Abzu has a lot of magical/AoE attacks that can bypass Cloud’s Punisher mode, so don’t rely on it. It’s possible to shatter Abzu’s horns, but it can be tricky to hit these now that Barret isn’t in the party. Just pile on the damage and make sure to keep the party’s health up in case it uses Blackwater Blast, as this has a huge AoE and deals a ton of damage.

Ghoul

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Ghoul hides behind the furniture in the room, which it can move with telekinesis. It’s weak to fire magic. Ghoul has a physical form and a ghostly form. It only takes stagger damage when physical attacks are used on the ghostly form and magic on the physical form.

Eligor

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Eligor is weak against Ice magic, so Shiva is the top choice for a Summon (assuming the players have it). If Eligor is about to charge, switch to Cloud and his Punisher mode to counter it. When Eligor starts flying, switch to Aerith and use her basic attacks to deal damage and save Cloud & Tifa for items and spells. Once the battle enters its final phase, aim for the chariot wheels to stagger Eligor and leave it vulnerable to damage.

Reno and Rude

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

The first phase of the fight is against Reno on his own and the same tactics from the last battle against him are still effective. Once you shave a third of his health off, Rude will swoop in with his helicopter. Use Barret’s gun arm or spells to quickly bring down the chopper. The player then has to right Reno and Rude at the same time. Concentrate on Reno first, as he has more AoE attacks than Rude and can harm multiple party members at the same time. They use most of the same moves from their original battles.

Abzu 2

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Abzu will be joined by Abzu Shoats throughout the battles and these will keep respawning. Abzu will use lots of physical attacks during this fight, so Cloud’s Punisher counters are highly effective here. Abzu is still weak to fire magic and Ifrit will deal a lot of damage to it. Abzu’s Pounce attack can be blocked and its Charge attack can be countered. Abzu will repeatedly use Blackwater Blast during this battle, so the player needs to keep an eye on the pipes around the arena and be ready to dodge when the water starts pouring out.

The Valkyrie

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

This boss is weak against both lightning and wind spells. The Valkyrie starts the battle in the sky, so use Barret’s long-range attacks or lightning magic to damage it. Once its stagger meter is filled, it will move closer, allowing Cloud and Tifa to perform melee attacks. The Valkyrie will fire out at a drone that can fire a satellite-laser which moves around the battlefield and deals a ton of damage, so keep an eye out for it. Once it uses Drill Dive, it will be stuck in the ground and be left open to melee attacks.

Specimen Ho512

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Like Abzu, H0512 has little buddies that need to be taken out as quickly as possible. Take out its left claw as soon as possible in order to put it into the pressured state. In its second phase, H0512 will become more aggressive with its physical attacks, leaving it wide-open for Cloud’s Punisher mode counters.

In the third phase of the battle, H0512 can use its options as explosives, so take them out as soon as possible. Keep shattering its claw and piling on the damage and it should go down quickly.

Swordipede

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

The Swordipede battle will start with Barret and Cloud, before fleeing to the area with Aerith and Tifa. Swordipede is hard to hit with physical attacks, as it can damage/interrupt party members with the spikes on its body. Barret’s long-range attacks will quickly fill up its stagger meter. Once it drops to half health, it will move to the Aerith and Tifa area. The player will have a chance to switch Materia before the battle switches perspective.

Aerith’s long-range basic attack and Tempest ability are the safest way to attack. Just be wary of the console in the middle of the arena, as it can block the player’s view of Swordipede. When it uses Live Wire, run in the opposite direction to avoid taking a lot of lightning damage.

Jenova Dreamweaver

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Jenova Dreamweaver has tentacles that need to be cut off before the body can be damaged. Dreamweaver’s Vengeance attack deals a ton of damage, so be ready with a healing spell or a Phoenix Down if she uses it. Once it drops below half health, it will start sprouting tentacles from the floor. Attack these as quickly as possible to leave Dreamweaver vulnerable. If a character is knocked back, use the pillars around the room as temporary cover. Just keep moving to avoid Dreamweaver’s slow, but powerful attacks, and she will eventually be defeated.

Rufus & Darkstar

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Don’t bother attacking Rufus during the first stage of the fight. Focus on Darkstar. The secret to beating Darkstar is a Punisher mode counter whenever it uses its Whirlwhip move. This will deal a lot of damage and leave Darkstar in the pressured state. Pile on as many hits as possible during this phase and Rufus will soon be on his own.

Rufus will dodge or counter most hits. The secret to defeating him is waiting until he needs to reload, as he will be vulnerable during this time. Block his attacks if he uses Guns Akimbo and dodge if he uses Bright Lights.

Arsenal

Final Fantasy VII Remake Boss Guide

Arsenal starts the battle protected by a barrier that is being provided by a bunch of Barrier Drones. Aerith and Barret are both in the party for this battle, so the focus will be on dealing ranged damage. The pillars around the room can be used for protection against Arsenal’s long-range weapons. Arsenal is vulnerable to attacks spells fired at its back, so be ready to switch between party members and ensure the one behind it has ATB bars. During the last phase of the battle, the player needs to just focus on dealing damage and killing Arsenal as soon as possible, as it’s final attack will decimate the party.

Sephiroth

This is the final battle in the game, so don’t be afraid to burn through any remaining elixirs, turbo ethers, or mega potions that are left.

Cloud is facing Sephiroth on his own during the first phase of this battle, so barrier and haste spells will make things a lot easier. When Sephiroth uses Telluric Fury, go for a Punisher counter to deal a ton of damage/stagger.

Over the course of the battle, more party members will join the fight, based on how Cloud responded to them throughout the game. A new character will join the fight during the second phase of the battle. Avoid attacking Sephiroth when he uses Scintilla, as it will allow him to perform a counterattack.

Sephiroth will sprout a black wing during the third phase of the battle and he will become far more aggressive. A third character will join at this point. Have one character completely focused on healing, as Sephiroth will deal tons of damage with his attacks and spells. Sephiroth will use Elemental Infusion throughout the fight, which will clue the player in as to what spells he will use next. Use any summons of Limit Breaks you have, as the purpose of this phase is to end the battle as soon as possible, as Sephiroth will destroy the player if the fight goes on for too long. This is the final phase of the battle, so go all out and beat Sephiroth as soon as possible.
