It’s going to take several years before all of the games that make up the Final Fantasy VII Remake series are released. The timeframe involved has led some fans to believe that it will be ported to the next generation of consoles, which may have just been confirmed by the head of Square Enix.
The first entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series is due to be released in 2020 and will concentrate on the events that happen in the city of Midgar, which encompassed the first few hours of the original game. The fact that such a small part of the game is being expanded to the length of a full game suggests that the Final Fantasy VII Remake could be spread across a lot of games, which will take years to complete.
The idea of Final Fantasy VII Remake being a cross-generation series has seemingly been supported by Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matsuda, who was asked about the possibility by Game Informer.
“It’s the hottest topic at the moment and we thought you might ask us that,” Matsuda said. “I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles. I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.”
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are nearing the end of their lifespan and both Sony and Microsoft have already started to discuss their next systems. There were a lot of games that appeared on both the PlayStation 3/PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360/Xbox One when the transition from console generations last happened, with titles like Dragon Age: Inquisition and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain seeing cross-generational releases.
It would make a lot of sense for the Final Fantasy VII Remake series to appear on as many systems as possible, especially as a collected release with updated features would be a great fit for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett in years to come.
Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released on March 3, 2020.
