Can Doctor Strange’s magic touch bring Uncle Ben to the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home? From the original Marvel comic books right up to Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, the tragic death of Uncle Ben represents a key step on Peter Parker’s road to becoming a superhero. So familiar was the Uncle Ben origin story, in fact, Spider-Man: Homecoming decided to skip it altogether. When Tom Holland’s Peter Parker swung into Disney’s superhero franchise he was already one uncle light, with only Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May turning up on parent-teacher evening. Peter has very subtly referenced Uncle Ben, but 2 solo films deep, the man himself hasn’t appeared.

That could all change thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and the absolute hammering Marvel’s multiverse is about to take courtesy of Peter Parker and his magic Avenger pal, Doctor Strange. As revealed by Spider-Man: No Way Home’s record-breaking trailer, Strange will cast a spell to make the world forget Spidey’s true identity, but Peter’s interference triggers a crack in the multiverse, bringing forth Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and (probably) many other familiar faces from foreign franchises.

At this point, it’d be more surprising if Uncle Ben wasn’t among them. Surely there’s at least one universe where Peter’s mentor never died? Though it’d be a fun twist, another universe’s Uncle Ben in Spider-Man: No Way Home wouldn’t carry much weight. Given how different Holland, Maguire and Garfield all look, Peter might not even recognize another Ben from the multiverse. Uncle Ben’s potential Spider-Man: No Way Home resurrection only works on an emotional level if it’s the exact same man Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May once knew. Fortunately, Doctor Strange can arrange that too.

In the 1990s, Spider-Man faced semi-regular foe Xandu – a sorcerer who rules over the Death Dimension. As the name implies, this morbid corner of the multiverse acts as something of a limbo for recently deceased Marvel characters who can’t move on, but usually remains inaccessible to the living. If Spider-Man: No Way Home is tipping the contents of various dimensions into the MCU, there’s no reason the Death Dimension couldn’t be included. It’d be especially poignant for Peter Parker and Aunt May to enjoy one last conversation with Uncle Ben when he emerges from the Death Dimension, and the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer might actually tease this, with Holland and Tomei briefly spotted looking surprised by the arrival of a mystery figure in their apartment.

A reunion between MCU Spidey and Uncle Ben might even be why Peter ultimately stops abusing the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Based on trailer footage, it would appear that the web-slinger exploits a cracked multiverse to enjoy dual lives as Spider-Man and Peter Parker, ignoring whatever damage his exploits might be causing. The trailer reveals Strange and Spider-Man fighting, and the sorcerer mentions Peter living “two different lives.” A heartfelt, inspirational speech from Uncle Ben (probably involving power and responsibility, or something) might finally encourage Peter to kick his multiverse habit, and face the music.

A posthumous conversation between Peter Parker and Uncle Ben would also allow the MCU to finally include a vital character without retreading old Spider-Man ground. Marvel fans are used to seeing Ben inspire his wall-crawling nephew during the beginnings of his superhero career, setting Peter on the road to becoming Spidey. Spider-Man: No Way Home can honor Uncle Ben’s importance by having him steer Tom Holland’s Peter Parker away from a dark path during a difficult time – a new twist on an old classic.
