Shallows Cod is one of the many new fish added to the overhauled Spearfishing system of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. Unlike basic fishing done with a rod and bait, Spearfishing can only be done underwater and is unlocked during the Stormblood expansion. To obtain the ability to spearfish in FFXIV, players will need to complete “A New Fishing Ex-spear-ience,” a Level 61 quest given by Sumitsubo in The Ruby Sea at X:28.9, Y:15.9. FFXIV fans should note that the level requirement applies to their Fishing job, not their combat-related class.

Once players have unlocked Spearfishing and reached Thavnair in Endwalker, they will be able to find Shallows Cod within the zone’s underwater area. To enter Thavnair, players only need to complete the first two Main Scenario quests in FFXIV: Endwalker. Afterward, players will be given the option to speak to Thancred or Krile. Thancred will provide the quest, “For Thavnair Bound,” during which players will be granted access to the area.

To catch Shallows Cod in Final Fantasy XIV, players must be a Level 90 Fisher. The fish Teeming Water spawns are located off the western coast of The Perfumed Rise. FFXIV players who have unlocked flying in Thavnair will have a much easier time accessing the area. Shallows Cod Spearfishing nodes can be found in Saltwater’s Welcome, an underwater area around X:5.2, Y:26. Use the diving ability from Stormblood to travel beneath the water’s surface.

Catching Shallows Cod in FFXIV: Endwalker

Within Saltwater’s Welcome, players must now equip their Spearfishing Gig and activate their Fathom and Shark Eye Actions to locate Teeming Waters. Then, interact with one of the underwater nodes to begin fishing. Within the new Spearfishing minigame, Final Fantasy XIV fans will need to thrust their gig at the fish to catch them. Fish silhouettes will come in different shapes and sizes, but the Shallows Cod will appear as a medium-sized, slow-moving fish with shark-like fins. Players must jab their gig at these particular shadows to catch Shallows Cod fish in Final Fantasy XIV with careful timing.

When Spearfishing in FFXIV, players should also pay attention to where a fish’s “weak spot” is located on its body. This vulnerable point is displayed with brackets around a single area of a fish’s body. The goal is to have the sharp ends of the player’s gig touch those spots to catch the fish successfully. Keep in mind that an FFXIV fan can only spearfish at a location for a limited time. At the top of the Spearfishing window is a gauge of fish “wariness.” Once this meter fills up, the fish will flee, the player will be forced to stop. However, if FFXIV fans are able to catch Shallows Cod or other fish in quick successions, the rate at which Wariness rises will become slower, granting for a longer opportunity to catch fish.
