Firefly star Gina Torres says she’s willing to appear in an episode of The Rookie – as long as former co-star Nathan Fillion is actually there. In Firefly, a beloved but short-lived space Western, Torres played Zoe Alleyne Washburne, a skilled fighter and second-in-command on Serenity. Meanwhile, Fillion took on the role of Mal Reynolds, Zoe’s close friend and captain of the ship. The show also starred other big names like Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, and Adam Baldwin. Though Firefly was cancelled midway through season 1, it received a followup movie, Serenity, in 2005.
Despite its relatively short time on air, the Joss Whedon series has developed a loyal following among a small group of passionate fans. Fillion and other members of the cast are asked about their time on the show often, with Fillion especially very open about how much he enjoyed working on it. Over the years, various cast members have reunited for convention panels and similar events. Several have also guest-starred on Fillion’s other shows. Torres, Baldwin, and others guest-starred on Castle, while Tudyk did the same on The Rookie. Now, it sounds like Torres is willing to be the next Firefly star to pop by Fillion’s current gig.
At this past weekend’s Comic-Con@Home, Fillion hosted a panel titled “A Conversation with Nathan Fillion.” During the panel, he was joined by several former co-stars, including Tudyk and Torres. The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley also participated and was there when Fillion asked Torres if she’d be willing to guest-star on an episode of the police drama. Torres agreed but had one stipulation:
Torres: Yes, I would, absolutely. But you have to promise you’ll actually be there, ’cause when I came on to Castle, you bailed.
Fillion: Alexi?
Hawley: Yeah, there’s no way I would bring you on the show and not write you into Nathan’s story. So yes, I promise you that. He won’t be able to bail.
The Castle episode Torres guest-starred in, 2013’s “Reality Star Struck,” featured her as a reality TV star potentially involved in a murder. However, Fillion and Torres didn’t share the screen too much in the episode. It makes sense Torres would want more scenes with Fillion if she were to stop by The Rookie. Luckily, it sounds like Fillion and Hawley agree with her.
Since her time on Firefly, Torres has worked steadily in TV, playing a leading character in the legal drama Suits for seven seasons. She also led the show’s spinoff series, Pearson, though that was cancelled last year. Torres has also racked up dozens of guest-starring roles over the years, making her a good fit for The Rookie. With the show already renewed for season 3, it seems entirely likely Torres could join Tudyk in guest-starring on the series. Even better, it sounds like viewers would be in for a more substantial Firefly reunion this time around.
