Florida Mans Late Night Pokémon GO Session Ends In A Drug Bust

Pokémon GO might not be as popular as it was three years ago, but trust us, there are still millions of people playing the game worldwide. In the past 12 months, Pokémon GO developer Niantic has really upped its game when it comes to keeping things feeling fresh. Updates have come in the form of more generations of Pokémon and the addition of field research.

Whether you still play Pokémon GO or not, most people associate the game with the good it has done. Not only is it a great and innovative idea, but it also encourages people to get out of the house, and also united pretty much all of us when it was first released in 2016. However, there have been some cases where Pokémon GO has gotten tangled up with the law.

The most recent example of this happened at a park in Tampa, Florida. Jonathan Ortiz, a keen Pokémon GO player, ventured to Beacon Meadows Park to hunt for Pokémon. Innocent enough, right? Trouble is, he chose to do so at 2 am, which we would not recommend. Since the park in question closes at night, Ortiz’s presence within it caught the attention of the authorities.

Game Rant reports that when police officers approached Ortiz, it became clear that the late night gamer was smoking marijuana. That prompted them to ask to search his vehicle nearby. That’s when things went from bad to worse for all parties involved. The officers who searched Ortiz’s car discovered 3.5 grams of cocaine, 5.5 pounds of THC oil, and a pound of marijuana. Not good.

Ortiz isn’t the first person to have been rumbled thanks to Pokémon GO. An attempted murderer was spotted and apprehended while playing the game, and one unlucky trainer stumbled upon a dead body while out filling their Pokédex. Thankfully for us here at TheGamer, the most exciting thing we’ve ever encountered while playing Pokémon GO was when an old lady asked us what we were doing in her back yard.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
