FlyQuest was founded on a sort of technicality; its initial roster previously competed for Cloud9-owned Cloud9 Challenger, but upon qualifying for the North American Championships in 2016, had to change ownership due to a rule preventing one organization from owning more than one team in the league. In the few years since, however, FlyQuest has solidified its identity partially through skill but also through what has now become a series of environmental “Go Green” initiatives. Earlier this year the team announced TreeQuest, its first of these, which was a pledge to plant a certain amount of trees after reaching particular in-game milestones. Now the team has revealed its newest environmental program, titled SeaQuest.

Prior to this announcement, TreeQuest resulted in a donation of more than 10,000 trees to One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organization that works to restore deforested areas around the world.

The team earned, in essence, one tree to be planted per time its player killed a member of the opposing team; 10 trees for each Ocean Drake kill; and 100 trees for each match win. Both FlyQuest and its sister team FlyQuest Academy partook. These numbers were doubled once FlyQuest qualified for the playoffs, and would have amounted to an additional 10,000 trees if the team was crowned champion.

SeaQuest works more-or-less the same fashion, but results in donations made to The Coral Reef Alliance, which is a nonprofit that works on rebuilding coral reefs around the world that have been impacted by severe environmental changes. The numbers are the same as the team’s prior initiative, but are attached to dollars rather than trees. This means that one kill by either FlyQuest or FlyQuest Academy results in a dollar donated to the organization, an Ocean Drake kill results in $10 donated, and a team win $100.

Should their total donation exceed $10,000, the team will visit a coral reef in person and document the experience. Additionally, SeaQuest also includes a component teaching beach preservation and plastic waste reduction. This means that the team will create video content teaching how to keep beaches cleaner in addition to hosting donation drives for existing organizations that do the same. More information can be found on the team’s website.
