Halo Infinite is set to return to the titular Halo rings as the setting for an open-world format. Co-creator and former creative director for the original Halo games Marcus Lehto has kept busy during the wait for Infinite by building a full-scale Halo ring in the Unreal Engine. The developer is credited with designing the series’ main character, Master Chief.

Lehto has spent the past few months rebuilding several iconic items and characters from the Halo series in UE4 — a project that culminated in a full-scale rendering of the Delta Ring from Halo CE.

“This is something we could never do in the original engine,” Lehto said in a tweet showing off a picture of his build of Master Chief and the ring. “It looks pretty close to how I depicted it way back in CE!”

As Lehto has continued work on the full-scale Halo, he has shared some interesting tidbits about the structure’s size and construction. According to the former creative director, the Halo spans 10,000 km in diameter, putting it in close range with the Earth’s 12,742 km. He’s also said that the ring’s sidewalls sit at 15 km high and are partially responsible for containing the structure’s gravity tech-assisted atmosphere.

Lehto started his avocational project sometime after he showed off some early builds of the first Halo game back in May. The demo he showed was a pre-alpha build of the game that was famously thrown together for Halo’s unveiling at Macworld in 1999. In a later demo of the early build, Lehto showed off some forgotten weapon prototypes, unused spaces, and early models of Master Chief. Shortly after, he started tweeting his progress reworking old models of CE Master Chief and the iconic Assault Rifle in Unreal Engine 4.

Earlier this year, Lehto’s development studio V1 Interactive shuttered less than a year after it launched its first and only game, Disintegration. The hybrid first-person shooter/real-time-strategy game met modest critical reception, many citing an enjoyable single-player story and a troubled multiplayer mode. Disintegration had been out for five months before V1 Interactive had permanently shut down its multiplayer servers in November of last year.

“At V1, our priority has been to the wellbeing of our employees,” Lehto wrote at the time of V1’s closure. “We’ve been transparent with them about the state of things for months and are making this decision now so they still have ample time to search for new jobs while being supported by our studio.”

Lehto’s return to Halo is a welcome experiment for the fanbase. Each of Lehto’s tweets with project updates receives a chorus of comments asking whether the oft-titled “father of the Master Chief” whether he’d consider making Halo games again. This project looks to be purely an unofficial passion project, but Lehto has stated that he’d consider working on a Halo project in a more official capacity.

“I love Halo,” Lehto said in an interview with HiddenXperia. “I love all parts of Halo. And I’ve got a lot of ideas…as far as what could happen in the Halo universe. So yeah, I’d be excited about working on Halo again.”
