Google has seemingly taken another huge step towards its gaming ambitions.

The company has appointed gaming industry veteran Jade Raymond as a vice president, with the former Ubisoft and Electronic Arts producer making the announcement via her Twitter account on Tuesday evening. She did not say what her exact role will be, however.

“I’m excited to finally be able to share that I have joined Google as VP!” she tweeted.

Raymond started off in the gaming industry as a programmer for Sony before moving to EA as a correspondent for The Electronic Playground. She would later take up a post at Ubisoft Montreal, where she would help produce Assassin’s Creed, going on to serve as the executive producer for Assassin’s Creed 2, Watch Dogs and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

She also helped open the Ubisoft Toronto Studio, serving as its managing director and helping with expansion. Raymond founded the Montreal-based Motive Studios after rejoining EA in 2015 but left the company again last year. She was handed the Legend Award at the 8th Annual New York Game Awards back in January.

The 43-year-old Canadian talent will no doubt help give Google that gaming industry push it’s looking for. And the news of her appointment comes just before it will host a keynote at this month’s Game Developers Conference.

Reports of a leaked patent for a controller design suggests that the company could soon announce a console of its own as rumors say Google is keen on competing with Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft in a realm they have dominated for a great many years.

Google is also reported as being in cahoots with Sega, with the two entities believed to be working together on said console.

Amid all of the reports and rumors, there’s really no telling just what Google is planning, but it’s definitely something regarding videogames.

Bringing Raymond in at such a time has already fueled the speculation and her hiring is definitely a step in the right direction. But making a name in an industry bossed by the aforementioned three will also prove a huge challenge.
