Metroid Dread launches this week, resurrecting one of Nintendo’s flagship series that has slowly but surely been replaced in its own genre. While Metroid Dread is a Metroidvania, so named after Metroid and Castlevania, modern Metroidvanias have eclipsed Metroid’s position in a genre the series is so foundational to it helped name. Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, and Ori are what most people think of these days when weighing up the best Metroidvanias. Metroid Dread, however, rolls back the years and reminds these young upstarts why the genre is named after it in the first place. It also re-establishes Metroid as a titan of the industry, and makes the rumoured Metroid movie so much more likely. So why don’t they just hurry up and cast Brie Larson in it already?

There is no other choice for the role. Larson looks the part, brings her Oscar winner calibre and MCU pedigree with her, and most importantly, she really fucking wants to be Samus. Video game movies have been getting better, but they remain hit or miss. Mostly, whether a video game movie lands or not comes down to how much it respects video games as a whole, and how much it understands the source material. Larson, a huge Metroid geek, brings so much more than her acting ability. She brings Metroid. Literally, she would probably bring Metroid and her Switch to the set every single day.

I know some of you don’t like her. It still staggers me how a gorgeous, blonde haired, slim, traditionally gorgeous, geeky, nerdy, gorgeous, video game loving, comic book reading, gorgeous actress managed to find herself on the wrong side of history with the basement dwellers. I know she once said not all movies were made with white men in mind, but I still find Brie Larson’s contentious position amongst the online community impossibly weird to understand.

Right now, in the Facebook comments under this article, there are probably people angry at me for suggesting Larson. Maybe even accusing me of clickbaitery for using her name – an actress who looks the part, has the right experience, is the right age, and has said on multiple occasions that she’s extremely keen to play Samus Aran. Whenever she’s asked about the hypothetical role in interviews, she begs Nintendo to cast her.

That should be no surprise either. Larson has made no secret of her love of video games, running a YouTube channel during the pandemic to celebrate – among other things – video games, especially Nintendo ones. Larson’s channel was so unguarded and personal, it was the best defence against the trolls that stain the front and the back of their trousers whenever they see her. Alongside Q&As and workout videos, Larson shared her Animal Crossing island, her favourite Fortnite tips, and used an unofficial Zelda cookbook to try some of Hyrule’s tastiest treats.

She is the perfect Samus Aran. There are other actresses you’d consider, sure. Jennifer Lawrence, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Moretz, Saoirse Ronan, and Kathryn Newton all vaguely look the part, or at least could after a few months of a Samus Aran workout regime. Too often fancasts point to the most obvious person based on looks alone, and sure, Larson does fit that. Ronan, as much as I enjoy her work, would be a terrible choice however, because there is so much more to Samus than a slim blonde woman what does all them shooty shoots and curls up in a ball. Larson is a huge fan of the series and is bought into Samus as a character. It has to be her.

Mostly, I just want this movie to exist. Casting Larson is proof that yes, this is a real movie with real people really being made by a real studio. Really. Metroid’s stock has fallen with its years in the wilderness, and even as Dread reminds everyone how it became so iconic in the first place, it still feels doomed to be overlooked as a relic of the past. With a darker, deeper story than many give it credit for, a Larson-led movie – perhaps helmed by Shang-Chi director and frequent Larson collaborator Destin Daniel Cretton – could give Metroid the spotlight it deserves.
