Epic has revealed when Fortnite Chapter 2: Season 2 will start, and the reason why Season 1 has been longer than any other season before it.

In 2019, Epic shook up Fortnite unlike anything players will have experienced before. It ushered in Chapter 2 of the popular battle royale game, and introduced a whole new island to its players. Fortnite went offline for a couple of days, causing some people to tear their hair out, and others to watch a live stream of the black hole island number one disappeared into.

The first run on the new island was dubbed Chapter 2: Season 1 and has now been ongoing for more than 100 days. Since Fortnite seasons typically last ten weeks, players aren’t accustomed to marathons like this. There has also been no end in sight, as dataminers recently discovered the rumored February 6, 2020, end date had been pushed back.

We now have an official start date for Chapter 2: Season 2 courtesy of a statement from Epic. February 20, 2020. Epic also explained one of the reasons why there has been such a long delay. Season 2 will bring with it the use of Unreal Engine’s Chaos physics system. That will give structures a more realistic look when destroyed, having them collapse rather than just disappear. “The goal is to ensure that Fortnite still feels like Fortnite,” reads part of Epic’s statement.

The new system will be rolled out to small groups of players first of all to ensure as few problems and bumps in the road as possible. The statement teases the reveal of a few other new elements that will be introduced during Season 2, but redacts all of the most important information. “We can’t brief you on all of next Season’s secrets just yet…” writes Epic.

Since Season 2 will be going on for almost another month, Epic has also revealed there will be a fresh batch of Overtime Challenges incoming to keep players busy. It also teased “a new two-week event” between now and the end of Season 1. Sounds as if there will be plenty to keep Fortnite players busy as we eagerly await Season 2 and the introduction of Chaos physics to the game.
