It’s probably safe to say that out of all the relationships on Friends, Monica and Phoebe’s is the least favorite pairing. This may be because the two women are total opposites. Where Phoebe is free-spirited and outgoing, Monica is organized and uptight. Their different styles of life is the main reason why Phoebe ends up moving in with her grandmother.

However, that is not to say their friendship is all chalk and cheese. There have been many times where Monica and Phoebe have made gestures that show how much they care about their relationship. From helping Chandler pick Monica’s engagement ring to Phoebe’s chickenpox fiasco, here are the 5 best things Monica did for Phoebe (& 5 Phoebe did for her).

10 Phoebe Stops a fight between Monica & Rachel

In “The One After the Superbowl”, Monica and Rachel have a falling out after they fight over who should date Jean Claude Van Damme. Phoebe decides to play mediator between the two, trying to get the high school best friends to make up before they say something they would regret.

The fight soon escalates quickly, with Monica and Rachel coming to blows in their apartment. Phoebe is then forced to intervene when they refuse to listen to sense, pulling them apart by their ears. When they begin to destroy each other’s clothing, Phoebe loses her temper and forces them to think about what they were doing. This time it works, with Monica and Rachel apologizing to each other.

9 Monica Holds a baby shower for Phoebe

It was pretty obvious to all that Phoebe suffered from mood swings. In “The One With The Worst Best Man Ever”, fans got to witness them in full-swing when she rants at the gang about being pregnant. To try and cheer her up, Monica and Rachel organize a baby shower for her.

However, they soon realize that this won’t be the traditional baby shower as Phoebe is the surrogate for her brother and his wife. Monica suggests that maybe they buy her gifts that she can use for after the pregnancy. When that doesn’t work, they soon realize that Phoebe is disheartened that she’s not the babies’ mother. After reassuring her that she would be “cool Aunt Phoebe”, Phoebe is seen to be in better spirits.

8 Phoebe Tries to help Monica get over Richard

In the aftermath of her break-up with Richard, Monica is seen struggling with insomnia. In “The One with the Princess Leia Fantasy”, Phoebe is seen sitting at the breakfast table, discussing her concerns about Monica’s lack of sleep. To try and help her, Phoebe offers to teach her some relaxation techniques.

She first advises her to try and envision a happy place without Richard. Although it doesn’t appear to work, fans can appreciate that Phoebe is the only one out of the group that tries to get her to sleep. It’s one of those moments where you wish you had a friend like her.

7 Monica Helps Phoebe when she gets chicken pox

In “The One With The Chicken Pox”, Phoebe announces to the gang that an ex-boyfriend is returning to the city for two weeks. However, she runs into a problem when she discovers that she has caught chicken pox. It is implied that Monica suggests she stay at her apartment since the reunion takes place here. She could have easily sent Phoebe back to her apartment so it was nice of them to keep an eye on her.

While she is staying at their apartment, Monica also helps Phoebe to prepare for her date. She does her best to comfort Phoebe about her looks, telling her that Ryan wouldn’t care because he just wants her company. Although it was not what she had in mind, Phoebe does enjoy her weekend.

6 Phoebe Encourages Monica’s catering business

Fans may recall a time where Monica struggled to get a job after she was fired. However, her career takes a step in the right direction when she starts her own catering business. This can all be seen in “The One With The Dirty Girl” when Phoebe loans her money so she can afford the equipment to cater for a funeral.

This is also the first time fans had seen how well they work together. For instance, while Monica is hesitant to ask her customer for the payment, Phoebe steps up and confronts the widow because she recognizes the scam she’s trying to pull. In return, Monica asks Phoebe if she would like to go into business with her.

5 Monica lets Phoebe off the hook with the terrible sous-chef

In “The One With Rachel’s Date”, Monica does Phoebe a huge favor when she sets the masseuse up with her sous-chef. Although Monica wants to fire him after he set her pastry chef on fire, she is willing to give him a second chance after Phoebe asks.

After some time, both Monica and Phoebe’s relationship with Tim seemingly deteriorates. Monica still wants to fire him but doesn’t want it to occur at the same time Phoebe dumps him. Ultimately, it is Monica who ends up giving Tim another chance after feeling guilty, which allows Phoebe to get off the hook.

4 Phoebe turns “did a Monica” into a positive

When Monica and Phoebe first began working on the catering business, the first customer they cater to is her parents. In “The One With The Cuffs”, Monica finds herself in a spot of bother when she loses a blue fingernail in the mini quiches. This then leads to the coining of the phrase “pulled a Monica”.

Surprisingly, it is Phoebe who encourages her to stand up to her mother. She tells Monica that she should try to turn the phrase into something positive and to not give up. In a short amount of time, they manage to pull together a casserole, which is a hit success at the party. Monica is also delighted when her mother apologizes for doubting her.

3 Monica gives Phoebe a place to stay

In “The One Where Ross Dates A Student”, Phoebe and Rachel find themselves homeless after their apartment is accidentally burnt down. The two women plan on moving in with their friends, where Rachel ends up staying at Joey’s and Phoebe at Monica’s.

Although fans see why Phoebe moved out of the apartment in the first place, Monica proves to be an excellent host. She bakes her cookies, a pie and offers to prepare breakfast for her too. It may be a little much but you have to appreciate all the effort she puts in to make her friends feel welcome.

2 Phoebe picks out an engagement ring for Monica

Out of all the gang members, no one would have thought it would be Phoebe who would help Chandler pick out the engagement ring. Yet, it proved to be a good choice as fans got to see how well Phoebe knew Monica. Phoebe also showed what a good friend she was when Chandler asked her to keep it a secret from the gang because he was worried it would get back to Monica.

Phoebe also proved to be a big help when Chandler had to try and get the ring back. She goes with him to the restaurant and pretends she is dying to manipulate the guy into giving it back. The plan works as the man looks sympathetic towards their “circumstances”, trading rings with Chandler. Monica had Phoebe to thank for her perfect proposal.

1 Monica brings Mike to Barbados

The kindest thing Monica did for Phoebe was to invite Mike to Barbados. The last time fans saw Mike, he and Phoebe were breaking up after the musician realized they wanted different things for the future. During their time apart, Phoebe reunited with David and invited him to come to Barbados.

In Barbados, David revealed that he was going to propose to Phoebe. This caused Monica to intervene with the relationship as she knew that Phoebe was not over Mike. Instead, she called Phoebe’s ex and told him to come to Barbados. Ultimately, this was a great decision as it led to Phoebe reconciling with Mike.
