Monica Geller is best remembered as the one who held the group together on Friends. She was the chef with a Type A personality and strong competitive nature, one that only became more evident as the series progressed. Monica’s close relationships with all of her friends brought them closer together, and she was a generally good friend.

However, there were times when Monica wasn’t afraid to cheat or lie to get ahead. She always had to be right and be winning, even if it might hurt someone else. There were a number of times Monica lied to the people she cared most about, sometimes for the sake of protecting them, and others just to save face.

10 The Lie About Her Age

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

In the Season 1 episode, “The One with The Ick Factor”, Monica reveals to her friends that she lied to the guy she was seeing and told him that she was 22 instead of her actual age, 26.

It doesn’t seem like a horrible lie at the time, but after she finds out that he also lied about his age – he’s only eighteen – Monica becomes embarrassed and disgusted. Of course, her lie wasn’t as bad as his, but both of them omitting the truth from each other made for a messy situation that could’ve been avoided completely.

9 The Lie About Julie

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

After Ross begins dating Julie in Season 2, Monica secretly becomes friends with her, thinking that Rachel won’t be hurt by what she doesn’t know.

Monica’s inability to tell a convincing lie exposes her immediately, and Rachel is even more hurt that she would hang out with Julie behind her back. Sure, Rachel would’ve been a little upset regardless, but Monica lying to her made her a worse, dishonest friend.

8 The Lie About Her Future

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

At the end of Season 2, Monica and Richard realize that they want different things for their futures. She wants to get married and have a family, and he doesn’t want to start a new family in his 50s.

Wanting to keep him in her life, she lies and says that she doesn’t need kids to be complete. They continue their relationship until she comes clean and admits that she needs to be a mom, and needs to be with someone who wants to have kids with her, not someone who feels forced to. She initially lied to protect her heart, but just ended up delaying their inevitable breakup.

7 The Lie About Sleeping with Joey

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

In an effort to hide their romantic relationship, Monica and Chandler got Joey in on their shenanigans. When a pair of underwear was found on Monica and Rachel’s couch, Joey took the responsibility for it.

Monica later ‘came clean’ and said that she kept the underwear from when the two of them slept together. At this point, her and Chandler’s relationship was already thriving and there was no need to continue the lie, and make it worse by getting a third party involved.

6 The Lie About Chandler

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

Shortly before her parents came over for Thanksgiving dinner in Season 6, Monica let Chandler know that she was lying by omission to her parents. They didn’t know the two of them were living together, let alone dating.

She did this because she knew her parents didn’t approve of Chandler, because they were under the impression that he got high in their home back in college. Monica could’ve cleared all of this up by telling both her parents and Chandler the truth upfront, instead of furthering the divide between them.

5 The Lie About Her Closet

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

Monica was known for her famously clean apartment, and the need for everything to be done exactly how she liked. When Chandler discovered he had never seen the inside of their hallway closet, she lied and told him he wasn’t allowed to, increasing his curiosity.

Turns out, the closet was a mess, filled with things Monica didn’t have a home for. Instead of telling Chandler this right away, she created a sense of mystery and mistrust in her marriage, which wasn’t at all necessary and would never have changed the way he felt about her.

4 The Lie About Her Self-Control

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

After their wedding, Monica assures Chandler that she will wait until he gets back from developing the pictures to open their gifts. While he is gone, however, she opens each and every one of them.

It would’ve saved her a lot of guilt and drama had she just told him that she had no self-control and wanted to open the presents without him. Given that most of the gifts were home decor, he probably wouldn’t have minded that she wanted to unwrap without him.

3 The Lie About Rachel’s Mom

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

On the day of Rachel’s baby shower, Phoebe and Monica discover that they forgot to invite Rachel’s mother to the event. Monica panics and lies to both Rachel and her mother, assuring Rachel that she was invited and explaining to her mom that it was a spur-of-the-moment decision to throw her daughter a shower.

Monica is then disappointed when Rachel’s mother is cold toward her, something made worse by the fact that she lied about forgetting to invite her. Had Monica just been honest about her mistake, Rachel’s mother may have been more forgiving.

2 The Lie About Lottery Tickets

Friends Unnecessary Lies Monica Told

When the friends decide to buy lottery tickets in Season 9, they divide them up evenly among them – or so they think. As the night unfolds, Monica unveils a hidden stash of tickets she bought specifically for Chandler and her, causing her friends to get upset.

Monica bought the extra tickets in hopes of having a higher chance at winning. Chandler recently left his job and they were struggling financially, and she wanted them to have a better shot. While her motives weren’t all bad, keeping it a secret made her look shady and untrustworthy.

1 The Lie About Her Occupation

When Monica and Chandler get a call from the adoption agency telling them a pregnant woman would like to meet with them, they are elated. They quickly discover, however, that their file has been mixed up with someone else’s because the young woman believes them to be a reverend and a doctor.

Instead of immediately clearing the air, Monica goes all-in on the lie because she thinks it will give them a better chance at adopting the baby. Chandler eventually reveals the truth but begs the mother to still consider them because Monica would make such an amazing mom. Monica never needed to lie in the first place, because the birth mom liked her and Chandler for their personalities, and ultimately didn’t care what they did for a living.
