HBO’s latest Game of Thrones prequel series 10,000 Ships is gaining steam as Person of Interest alum Amanda Segel has signed on to pen the script. Set approximately a millennium prior to the mothership story, the potential series will center on Princess Nymeria as she journeys with the Rhoynar to Dorne, where she eventually marries Lord Mors Martell. Both the original HBO drama and the prequel are based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

After eight seasons of high ratings and critical acclaim, as well as 12 Primetime Emmy Awards and 52 nominations, Game of Thrones came to an end on HBO in May 2019. Not wanting to completely lose the audience it amassed over its eight-year run, HBO began development on a number of prequel projects, though only one made it past the pilot stage to enter production: the Olivia Cooke-led House of the Dragon. On the heels of that, a number of other projects were announced, including an HBO Max animated drama and three other series including 10,000 Ships.

With production currently underway on House of the Dragon, it’s been confirmed (via Variety) that fellow potential prequel project 10,000 Ships is progressing in its development as Segel has signed on to write it. In addition to Person of Interest, Segel’s previous credits include Hulu’s Helstrom, USA’s Shooter, Spike’s The Mist, and CBS’ Without a Trace. It’s currently unknown if she will also serve in any kind of producing capacity as she has with all of her previous TV projects.

Unlike The CW’s Arrowverse, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, or even Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe, the rapid-fire nature of HBO’s attempts to find a future for Game of Thrones has been anything but pleasant for fans to see. Rather than taking their time and developing one project at a time before getting to work on the next one, the WarnerMedia network seems more interested in taking at least one step forward with multiple series to only later decide they’re no longer interested in them. While keeping fans entirely in the dark as to the future of their favorite franchises isn’t always the brightest idea, as conversation and popularity will die down from doing so, it does at least make audiences more trusting and hopeful about announcements when they are steps forward instead of backward.

Though Segel’s lack of any fantasy genre efforts in her past might warrant some concerns about how 10,000 Ships could turn out, it should be noted Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff’s only genre outing prior to bringing Martin’s novels to life was 2004’s Troy. With its sea-faring setting and prequel-era story, one can hope that the potential series could at the very least shake up the formula fans came to expect from the series across its eight seasons.
