One Day at a Time falls in that unfortunate category of Netflix write-offs (with the usual excuse: lack of viewership.) Its story, however, resonated with so many people, so many communities — latinx, queer, vets, the list goes on — that POP TV decided to snatch it up for a fourth season.

From Abuelita’s scathing wit to Schneider’s endearing antics, One Day at a Time’s plethora of hilarious characters are not unidimensional. Each role is associated with its own murky depths, showing audiences how actual families live in real life, as opposed to the sugary sitcoms that often plague TV networks. With the moral alignment technique used by Dungeons & Dragons, it makes it a bit easier to associate each character with their moral compass.

10 Penelope Alvarez – Lawful Good (Crusader)

Penelope is a single mom with two children to take care of (and a mother who needs more attention than both.) Although she enjoys extracting what little humor life has to offer, she is rather strict when it comes to discipline. Penelope is a Crusader — not only does she serve her country, but also raises a family after her husband ups and leaves her. She is very clear on what she wants, considering that she breaks up with Max because he wants to have children (and Penelope is explicitly uninterested.)

9 Dr. Berkowitz – Neutral Good (Benefactor)

Lydia’s substitute paramour, Leslie Berkowitz, is too nice a guy to refuse a kind deed (which is probably why the cunning old woman leads him on.) He embodies the Benefactor, especially when he shows a paternal pride in Schneider’s sobriety.

The interaction between them is adorable, with Schneider responding that he finds Leslie to be a great father figure. Dr. Berkowitz’s kindness sometimes backfires on him, like when Katie, his daughter, treats him extremely rudely but still expects favors from her father.

8 Ramona – Neutral Good (Benefactor)

Ramona is Penelope’s obviously lesbian friend (to the point of hitting on her, albeit in a jocular manner.) As a Benefactor, she helps Penelope come to terms with the fact that her daughter, Elena, is an out-and-proud member of the queer community.

She is incredibly considerate, often putting her own feeling behind others. For instance, Ramona rarely talks about her own problems in their therapy group, even though she is a lesbian vet who experiences a number of issues.

7 Alex Alvarez – Chaotic Good (Rebel)

The term Rebel was invented for Alex Alvarez — a boy who just assumes that he can do anything he wants because Abuelita is always there to bail him out. The best thing about him is the quintessentially teenage sarcasm that emerges from his mouth in response to almost any event.

Alex prefers style to substance, and god help anyone who dares to touch his flawless hair. The main reason he acts out, however, is because he feels below par in comparison with his mother and sister (both of whom have accomplished considerable feats in their own fields.)

6 Elena Alvarez- Lawful Neutral (Judge)

Elena’s coming out at her quinceañera will resonate with queer audiences for a long time to come. She is a hard-working young woman, aside from her predilections toward Twitch streaming (that her mother considers frivolous.)

Elena’s Judge nature is especially strong when she takes up social and political causes, but she tends to harp on about it for hours, irritating everyone in the vicinity. For instance, when Penelope rejects a census-taker, Elena talks at length about her responsibility as a citizen and chides her for disrespecting the law.

5 Syd – True Neutral (Undecided)

Syd is Elena’s other half, equally nerdy and into all the same things, except with slightly less enthusiasm than their partner. They are very private in nature, but this guardedness has more to do with making Elena comfortable.

For instance, Syd behaves as a True Neutral when their girlfriend wants to have sex, mainly because they don’t want to compel her into anything before she’s ready. Although Elena reacts with insecurity, Syd immediately comforts her, saying that their love will survive even a total lack of intimacy.

4 Pat Schneider – Chaotic Neutral (Free Spirit)

Schneider is the eccentric rich-boy who lives above the Alvarez apartment; he also owns the entire building. He has always been a Free Spirit, largely due to his limitless funding. This is clear from the number of useless, but highly expensive, objects lying around his apartment, from unique snow globes to rare record collections.

Nevertheless, Schneider shows that he cares deeply for the Alvarezes, often implying that he’s a member of the family (to the consternation of Penelope and Lydia.)

3 Lydia Riera – Lawful Evil (Dominator)

Lydia is not the stereotypical sweet old Cuban grandma — nor does she pretend to be. To the contrary, she is rude, boorish and downright offensive on many occasions. Even though she loves her family, and sometimes shows it too, Lydia’s behavior is best classified under the Dominator.

She babies her grandson, Alex, while acting cold and disrespectful towards Elena (except when she accepts her granddaughter’s queerness surprisingly fast). Further, in one episode, it is revealed that she used to make her own children fight each other for her favor.

2 Estrellita – Neutral Evil (Malefactor)

Estrellita is Penelope’s long-lost favorite cousin, with whom she had lost touch decades ago due to their respective mothers’ feud. She seems nice enough on the surface, but the Malefactor in her comes out at sporadic intervals.

For instance, when she implies that the treasured family mantilla should go to her family because “Elena won’t get married, anyway.” The worst of her comes out only after the whole family has gotten past their petty battles, when she toasts Donald Trump, saying that he “made America great again.”

1 Victor Alvarez – Chaotic Evil (Destroyer)

Victor suffers from extreme PTSD due to his time in Afghanistan, which consequently leads him to the safe space afforded by drinking and drugs. This does not work out well for his family however, as he becomes more and more like a Destroyer — until his fits of fury reach the point of divorce.

In fact, Victor doesn’t seem to have changed even later, when he literally walks out on Elena’s quince before the father-daughter dance (because he thinks her clothing choice is an insult/humiliation to himself and his family.)
