Fortnite quite rightly has the reputation of being the industry leader when it comes to video game crossovers. Any game that can get Batman, Spider-Man, Master Chief, and Ariana Grande on the same roster deserves that crown. However, crossovers aren’t exclusive to Fortnite. Pokemon has a fair few of its own, launching its own limited edition Oreos and Krispy Kreme doughnuts to celebrate turning 25 last year.

Pokemon’s latest team-up is a little stranger than the birthday-based food ones, though. Its UK account shared a video of England manager Gareth Southgate showing up at a primary school to surprise some kids and teach them a thing or two about playing the beautiful game. It’s actually not as completely random as it sounds, as Pokemon has been working with the English FA for a while in conjunction with its Pokemon Futsal Youth Cup.

For those unfamiliar with Futsal, the game is effectively a spinoff of football. A much faster version of the game with smaller teams that focuses on ball control and skill, as Southgate demonstrates to the starstruck 10-year-olds at Torriano Primary School. The video also shows some Youth Cup competitors posing for pictures with a Pikachu, though it’s unclear whether the Pokemon and Southgate were there at the same time.

Pokemon’s Futsal Youth Cup is a tournament open to boys and girls under the age of 16. Any teams can apply, although applications for this year’s cup are now closed. As you can see in the video above, teams picked for the cup get all sorts of Pokemon-themed stuff to prepare them for the tournament, including a limited edition footballer Pikachu Pokemon card. Stay away scalpers, you’ve tainted the Pokemon card market enough as it is.

Pokemon’s 25th birthday year might be over, but the company has continued its celebrations into 2022. Legends: Arceus launched last month and has been hugely successful and incredibly well-received. The game has already sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide, which likely means we will be getting more Pokemon games using its mechanics in the future.
