Star Wars Thrawn Novel Synopsis Grand Admirals Rise to Power

When Grand Admiral Thrawn made his first appearance in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire novel (which eventually added two more books, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, becoming The Thrawn Trilogy), he instantly became a fan favorite amongst readers of the Star Wars Expanded Universe – now called Legends. His popularity only grew from there, and Zahn brought the character back many different times in response. And then, finally, Thrawn made his on-screen debut in the animated Star Wars Rebels show.

Not long after, it was announced that Zahn would return once more to the world of Star Wars and the character he created by penning an origin novel titled Star Wars: Thrawn. Many fans were not only ecstatic at finally having Thrawn exist in the main canon (which Star Wars Rebels does), but to finally get more backstory from the original author. Now a fully detailed synopsis has been released for Star Wars: Thrawn.

Via Comic Book, an official synopsis has been released by publisher Penguin Random House detailing events taking place early on in Thrawn’s Imperial career and his eventual rise to the rank of Grand Admiral, despite Emperor Palpatine’s staunch anti-alien stance. This is the first time author Zahn has gone into great detail about the character’s origins. The cover of Star Wars: Thrawn and full synopsis can be found below:

“After Thrawn is rescued from exile by Imperial soldiers, his deadly ingenuity and keen tactical abilities swiftly capture the attention of Emperor Palpatine. And just as quickly, Thrawn proves to be as indispensable to the Empire as he is ambitious; as devoted as its most loyal servant, Darth Vader; and a brilliant warrior never to be underestimated. On missions to rout smugglers, snare spies, and defeat pirates, he triumphs time and again—even as his renegade methods infuriate superiors while inspiring ever greater admiration from the Empire. As one promotion follows another in his rapid ascension to greater power, he schools his trusted aide, Ensign Eli Vanto, in the arts of combat and leadership, and the secrets of claiming victory. But even though Thrawn dominates the battlefield, he has much to learn in the arena of politics where ruthless administrator Arihnda Pryce holds the power to be a potent ally or a brutal enemy.

“All these lessons will be put to the ultimate test when Thrawn rises to admiral—and must pit all the knowledge, instincts, and battle forces at his command against an insurgent uprising that threatens not only innocent lives but also the Empire’s grip on the galaxy—and his own carefully laid plans for future ascendancy.”

There’s quite a few details in this Star Wars: Thrawn synopsis, including a couple new characters as well as key insights into the life of Thrawn. This is certainly a positive for long-time fans looking forward to finally getting some answers as to how exactly the character managed to beat the odds and defy the speciesist behavior enveloping the Galactic Empire. With the Thrawn character finally gaining some traction in the world of Disney’s Star Wars, could a live action adaptation of the novel be an eventual possibility? There are certainly fans out there hoping this is the case.

Naturally, though, while the character of Thrawn is now canon, whether the original trilogy of books he debuted in qualify as well remains unlikely considering events that transpired in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This will potentially upset certain fans who were still holding out hope for an eventual movie adaptation of The Thrawn Trilogy, though a partial adaptation is certainly not out of the question. Regardless, Star Wars: Thrawn should provide fans with a lot of answers into the rise of the Grand Admiral to power, while hopefully showcasing more of the calculated and calm ruthlessness that led to his popularity.

Star Wars: Thrawn releases April 11, 2017.
