Genshin Impact 16s New Boat Travel Explained

Version 1.6 of Genshin Impact will be arriving near the beginning of June. miHoYo’s free-to-play RPG will be adding in several new features, including a Kazuha Banner and some exciting events. One of these events involves the long-awaited boat travel mechanic, although it may be slightly different than what some fans were expecting.

As usual, miHoYo shared most of the upcoming content in a live broadcast. The Genshin Impact 1.6 livestream started off by confirming Kazuha as a playable character and showcasing new summertime-themed skins for Barbara and Jean. Called “Midsummer Island Adventure,” Version 1.6 will bring Travelers and other characters on an adventure that includes a new island to explore. Although Inazuma won’t be included quite yet, the journey to this new nation will begin in 1.6. This means that the long-expected boat travel mechanic will be partially introduced in the next update thanks to a new mini-game event.

Thanks in part to the beta leaks, rumors of boat travel in Genshin Impact 1.6 had already surfaced online. While boats will still be a necessary way to get to Inazuma, these seafaring vessels will function a bit differently in Version 1.6 than expected. Instead, players can control their very own skiff – called a Waverider – and take part in a fun event to earn some valuable rewards.

How Genshin Impact 1.6’s Waverider Event Will Work

The Waverider can be steered around the sea, as players try to collect Wavesplitter Insignias. However, hilichurls and other enemies will be nearby, so players will need to be careful about their collecting endeavors. The Waverider also comes equipped with cannons, which means players can fight back without having to leave the confines of their boat. The enemies will be located on rafts, towers, and even small islands – so players will have the option to leave the Waverider and attack them in closer quarters, too. This can be especially helpful if the Waverider’s cannon power starts to twindle.

As with other Genshin Impact events, rewards for collecting Wavesplitter Insignias include Mora, Hero’s Wit, and Primogems. Much like the housing system in 1.5 added in a fun new mechanic, the Waverider in 1.6 introduces a new gameplay mechanic too – one that allows players to test their nautical skills in a limited capacity.

While those hoping for open-world boat travel in Version 1.6 may be disappointed, this latest Waverider event still looks pretty exciting. It’s a somewhat different mini-game for Genshin Impact, and it could be a way for miHoYo to test the waters for more expansive boat travel in a future update.
