Zak Bagans and his crew certainly know how to create a lot of hype around their series, Ghost Adventures, but the decision to tape live episodes of their investigations was a highlight of The Travel Channel’s long-running show.

Though often harshly criticized by skeptics who don’t believe in the paranormal, these type of reality television/documentary series programs provide light-hearted scares, interesting history about haunted locations, and show the science involved in investigating for budding paranormal investigators and demonology enthusiasts. Although it’s certainly less cinematic than James Wan’s The Conjuring franchise and the style of filming is more akin to movies like Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity with night-vision, shaky cam, and Bagans’ crew constantly asking “what was that?”, Ghost Adventures is a highly-entertaining, watchable show whether people believe or not.

While the show has been a success for The Travel Channel since 2008, it has spawned several different spin-off series, such as Deadly Possessions, Aftershocks, and has run numerous specials with Bagans and his team at the helm; there’s no shortage of haunted locations to explore. One special, Ghost Adventures Live, is a highlight of the entire series for numerous reasons.

Why Ghost Adventures Live Is The Series’ Best

Though Ghost Adventures does require its audience to place some suspension of disbelief before viewing, Bagans and his team are always dedicated to finding answers, digging to the root of whatever is causing the hauntings, and conducting their investigations with integrity. Through science, they explain various devices and what they do, and even though some would consider the entire format to be pseudoscience at best, it’s a logical take that relies more on facts than cheap tricks. Because of this, Ghost Adventures Live is all the more appealing, and one of the stronger facets of the show because they allowed the audience to witness every outburst, shifted object, and unexpected blips of EVP (electronic voice phenomena) in real-time.

This sort of entertainment has been explored by fictional horror properties, such as Halloween: Resurrection, before to a laughable and even ludicrous degree, but Bagans and his team’s informative approach that sometimes leaves them relatively empty-handed is a refreshing take. After all, even the most experienced ghost hunters don’t always find what they’re searching for; it’s all part of the mystery. Ghost Adventures Live has been done twice in the history of the show, first at Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia (aired Halloween 2009) and then at Zak Bagans’ own Haunted Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada (aired Halloween 2018). Both episodes, though tremendously entertaining, were surrounded by controversy.

During the Trans-Allegheny Asylum episode, Robert Bess claimed that his EMF meter was knocked out of his hand, but upon reviewing the tapes, the team discovered he threw it. Bagans and his crew condemned this behavior and said they couldn’t find any other explanation for the incident. In the Haunted Museum episode, Bagans was supposed to open the Dybbuk box, which is known as the most haunted object in the world. Bagans was accompanied by a Rabbi, Shae Harlig, who assisted with this endeavor, and claimed he wasn’t going to go along with a “script”. This confused audiences, and prompted both the Rabbi and Bagans to clarify, with Bagans going on the record to say that none of his shows are scripted at all; the use of the word was a miscommunication. Ghost Adventures has not yet scheduled any new live episodes, but could in the future, since the show is still very successful.
