Thankfully, the grappling hook is not something you can miss on as you progress through the story of Ghost of Tsushima. However, if you want to know when you’ll get it, and what quests you’ll need to get to that point, we’ve got you covered in this guide.

You might notice that highlighting missions in your menu will show you in advance what rewards there are upon completion. Eventually, that will read ‘Grapple Hook’, but not as early in the game as you might hope. The mission to keep an eye out for is called ‘Iron Hook’ in Jin’s Journey. This comes after beating Yuna’s missions, which include: The Warrior’s Code, The Broken Blacksmith, Hammer and Forge, and The Tale of Ryuzo. During these missions you’ll aid Yuna in various tasks, free her brother Taka, and then do a few missions for Ryuzo. Once all those are done, the grappling hook will be yours!

How To Use The Grappling Hook

If you’re wondering just how the grappling hook is used, it isn’t something that works anywhere, unfortunately. There are specific points in the world where you can activate it. You’ll notice them by the colorful ropes tied around protruding objects, such as tree branches or corners of roofs. Once you spot one, just jump, hit R2, and send your hook to the target. Once attached you’re free to climb up, or swing side to side and leap off. That’s particularly useful for chaining grapple points together without touching the ground. Just make sure you’re quick on the R2 button or you may fall to an untimely death!

The grappling hook is an essential tool in your belt, and not just because its fun to swing around with. Reaching hidden areas and finding secrets would be completely impossible without it, so get it early to start finding all of the collectibles the game has to offer.
