The Final Fantasy VII Remake series has the chance to take its story in new and inventive directions, but it also has the chance to include an old foe who has been traveling the Final Fantasy multiverse in search of swords. Gilgamesh has been retroactively added to Final Fantasy games in the past and his time has come to trade blows with Cloud Strife.

Gilgamesh debuted in Final Fantasy V as a villain with a power-up that gave him eight arms. He developed a rivalry with Bartz (the protagonist of the game) and the two fought throughout the story. The party encounters Gilgamesh one last time in the Dimensional Void and he sacrifices himself by dragging a monster named Necrophobe into the abyss. This would have been the end for Gilgamesh, but he returned in Final Fantasy VIII to steal Odin’s sword. It’s heavily implied by his dialogue that this is the same Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy V and he would go on to have more appearances in other Final Fantasy games. It seems that Gilgamesh is traveling through the multiverse in search of powerful swords, as well as a means to go home and fight Bartz one more time.

Gilgamesh has appeared in Final Fantasy games released after Final Fantasy V, but he has also been retroactively added to older games. It was possible to battle Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, in one of the new dungeons in Final Fantasy, as well as in Final Fantasy VI Advance. The fact that Final Fantasy VII Remake is so different from its source material means that it’s easy enough to add Gilgamesh in as a boss without distracting too much from the story.

Gilgamesh has been seen with a fake version of the Buster Sword in the past and it gives Square Enix an opportunity to joke about its iconic status, even though it wasn’t actually strong in Final Fantasy VII. The game could also have the Whispers drag Gilgamesh off at the end of the fight, as his presence as an outsider from the multiverse would make him a threat to fate’s plan.

Gilgamesh has been part of some of the most difficult and entertaining battles in the Final Fantasy series. A mano-a-mano fight between Cloud and Gilgamesh using the new action RPG style of Final Fantasy VII Remake could make for one hell of a battle, while also establishing that Gilgamesh visited another of the Final Fantasy worlds on his journey home.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available now for PlayStation 4.
