Of all the high schools on television, most people believe that Glee’s McKinley High School is one of the worst. Not only was the school rife with bullying but the teachers were also seen to tolerate and participate in it. Some fans even say Will Schuester let the students down because he had been too concerned with his own life to guide them.

Although most of this is true, fans know this wasn’t always the case. Will may have been self-absorbed. but he did try to do what was best for his students. The same applies to Sue Sylvester; she may have been the biggest bully of all, but deep down, she was protective of the teenagers.

10 Will: Taking The Blame So The Club Could Go To Sectionals

As many fans know, “Mattress” saw the glee club book themselves a commercial that they believed would lead to their first big break. However, what they failed to realize was that participation in the commercial would mean they would be disqualified from sectionals as their amateur status would be revoked.

Luckily, since Will accepted the payment, he found a loophole that would allow New Direction to go to sectionals if he resigned as the director. It was a selfless move on his part.

9 Sue: Protecting Kurt From Karofsky

In season 2, Sue got involved in the Kurt and Karofsky bullying storyline, which saw the latter torment the former for months.

Sue made it clear that she wouldn’t tolerate the bullying, expelling Karofsky after he threatened to kill Kurt. When Karofsky returned, Sue resigned from her position as principal to protect Kurt from further harm. Fans have to give her credit for doing more than the other teachers.

8 Will: Letting Sam, Quinn & Santana Sing Over Rachel

As fans remember, it took Rachel a long time to learn how to be a team player as she wanted to be the star of the show all the time. If Will considered giving a duet to one of the other members of the club, Rachel would have a big tantrum and go on a protest.

However, Will calls her out for her diva-ish ways and for not being a team player. It was a good moment as it gave fans the chance to see Sam, Quinn, and Santana shine, while also teaching Rachel a valuable lesson.

7 Sue: Bond With Becky

There were only a few people who got to see that Sue wasn’t a completely heartless monster. However, no one knew this more than Becky, who would often receive guidance and moral support from the cheerleading coach. For instance, when Becky was heartbroken after finding out that Artie didn’t reciprocate her feelings, Sue comforted her.

When Becky brought a gun to the school and it accidentally went off, Sue took the blame to protect her. Sue also helped her with her college applications and gave her a job after she graduated. Sue always wanted the best for her.

6 Will: Letting Rachel Down Gently

In one of the show’s stranger storylines, the viewers saw Rachel develop a crush on Will after the two sang a duet together. Throughout the episode, Will did his best to discourage Rachel, going to see Emma for advice and tried rejecting her through song. When this didn’t work, Will eventually told her how inappropriate it was.

However, Will did his best to help her self-esteem, letting Rachel know that she would eventually meet a boy who would love everything about her. Most people would say he dealt with the situation responsibly and respectfully.

5 Sue: Protesting The Rocky Horror Show

In “The Rocky Horror Glee Show,” the viewers saw Sue become the voice of reason when she protested against New Directions performing the play. As many fans know, Will decided to direct a production of the musical in an attempt to impress Emma.

However, Will eventually cancels the show when Sue points out realizes how irresponsible he was for exposing the teens to the risque material. She goes on to say how they had a duty to guide their students through school safely and teach them all about responsibility. This moment proved that she cared a lot about the education of the teens.

4 Will: Retrieving Brittany & Other Students In “Shooting Star”

In “Shooting Star,” the New Directioners found themselves locked in the choir room after they believed there was a shooter in the building. Through the tense time, Sam soon realizes that Brittany was in the bathroom and attempts to go and retrieve her. However, Beiste and Will were forced to calm him down after he put the group at risk.

Later on, the viewers saw Will go to retrieve her and a few other students from the bathroom, bringing them back to the choir room to join the others. Considering the school was on lockdown, Will went above and beyond to fulfill the duty of care he had towards his students.

3 Sue: Giving The Glee Club An Extra Year

After spending a year trying to destroy the club and succeeding in getting it disbanded, Sue had a change of heart in the season 1 finale. When everyone discovered Sue was on the judging panel, fans expected that it would end badly for New Directions and weren’t surprised with the final result.

However, what no one expected was for Sue to give them an extra year after realizing how much the club meant to the kids. It proved that she cared about their happiness more than her own vendetta.

2 Will: Becoming A Father Figure For Quinn

In season 1, fans saw Quinn undergo a huge character arc after she discovered she was pregnant. She got kicked off the Cheerios, lost her boyfriend, and was getting bullied. As a result, she created the “Glist” to regain her popularity.

However, it wasn’t long before Will discovered she was responsible and confronted her about it. While he did reprimand her for hurting others, Will showed her some compassion and refused to give her up to Figgins. Considering what the viewers had learned about her parents, Will was the role model she needed at this moment.

1 Sue: Teaching The Girls About Domestic Violence

In season 3, Glee explored another serious subject when the viewers saw Beiste involved in a domestically violent relationship. This was revealed when Roz overheard a few New Directions girls making several jokes about domestic violence after they spotted Beiste’s black eye.

Beiste, Roz, and Sue then took it upon themselves to teach the girls about the seriousness of the situation. When the girls sang Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango,” Sue reprimanded them for missing the point and to do better. It was good to see Sue help teach the girls a valuable lesson.
