Gloomhaven Sequel Frosthaven Breaks Kickstarter Record With Over $12 Million

Gloomhaven, the most critically acclaimed tabletop game of the decade, is getting a sequel, Frosthaven, which broke records on Kickstarter today by raising over $12 million by the end of its campaign. With funds like that, designer Isaac Childres has the budget at his disposal to make sure that Frosthaven will join its predecessor as one of the best crowdfunded tabletop games ever.

Announced in December 2019, Frosthaven will be a stand-alone campaign in the dark world Gloomhaven in which players will be tasked with defending a frozen outpost at the edge of a harsh northern frontier. That’s a considerable gameplay shift considering the first game was a more traditional dungeon crawler, so it says a lot about fans’ faith in Childres’s Cepholafair Games that they threw such a massive sum at a game advertising itself on its distinction from past work. If it ultimately disappoints, Frosthaven will go down as one of the greatest Kickstarter disappointments in the platform’s history, but several gameplay showcases and lore teasers suggest that won’t likely come to pass.

In a celebratory post on the Frosthaven Kickstarter page, creator Isaac Childres shared his astonishment with backers, whose funds have officially made the game “#1 funded board game” in Kickstarter history. At nearly $13 million, Childres missed that his game is actually the most highly funded game of any kind on the platform, beating out Kindgom Death: Monster 1.5 and Exploding Kittens for the top spot. However, he did accurately note that Frosthaven is the “#3 funded [project] across all categories,” an incredible achievement for the tabletop game’s 83,193 backers.

Frosthaven’s pre-release success is a testament not only to the quality of Gloomhaven, but to the sudden surge in the popularity of tabletop gaming. It’s a growing trend onto which major video game publishers like Capcom are hopping, and it’ll be interesting to see if this watershed moment will mark a renaissance of board gaming or preclude a forthcoming bust of epic proportions. Even franchises as massive and monied as Marvel are funding tabletop projects via Kickstarter, no doubt eager to take advantage of the huge sums that fans so willingly part with to make their dream projects a reality.

Backers and other Gloomhaven fans will see for themselves if this historical crowdfunding milestone pays off when Frosthaven launches in March 2021. Childres’s track record may be one-note so far in his short solo development career, but the odds of him making lightning strike twice with this sequel is looking more likely than ever.
