New fan art for Godzilla vs. Kong brings Ultraman, Dragon Ball Z and Neon Genesis Evangelion all into the impending clash of the titans. The film, set for release in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, has been highly anticipated since its initial announcement. As Godzilla and Kong’s duel approaches, some fans have taken it upon themselves to build the excitement even higher.

Major crossovers like Godzilla vs Kong are usually the domain of online fan art, fan films, and “who would win” blogs, not major blockbuster releases. Godzilla vs. Kong will join the small collection of recent such films, which includes similar monster mashes like Alien vs. Predator and Freddy vs. Jason. And with the recent Godzilla vs. Kong trailer’s promise that “One Will Fall,” fans of the genre will hopefully get an actual, definitive answer of which beast is the strongest.

Seemingly inspired by the crossover spirit of the film, artist Santa Fung (@FungKinChew on Twitter) tweeted a series of beautiful fan art imagining some other famous Japanese franchises being brought into the Godzilla vs. Kong fold. The first shows Kong wielding his battle axe from the trailer and wearing Dragon Ball Z Saiyan battle armor, as if he were a DBZ Great Ape. The other two pictures show Ultraman entering the fray, and one of the Evangelion mechs from Neon Genesis Evangelion taking on Godzilla himself. All three pieces are stunning in their style and detail and surely will spike interest in more canonical crossover amongst fans.

The hype surrounding Godzilla vs. Kong is a testament to the appeal of crossover stories in fiction. The MCU and DCEU may be the most prominent examples of such films lately, though even those only brought together characters from the same larger brands (Marvel and DC, respectively), something that’s always been a part of the comics world. A movie like Godzilla vs. Kong, where two established characters from different franchises are brought together, is even rarer due to the obvious rights issues.

Of course, those films also don’t exactly have a stellar critical track record. The original King King vs. Godzilla, both Alien vs. Predator films, and Freddy vs. Jason all received less-than-favorable reviews upon release, and fans weren’t unanimously won over either. Historically, such films have mostly served as fun what-ifs, not monumental movies in their own right. Legendary will try to change that legacy with the release of Godzilla vs. Kong.
