Call of Duty franchise is feeling confident in the current battle royale race, and one of the next entries might adopt genre-specific mechanics from Fortnite. Inheriting competitor’s ideas is not something entirely new for the series, as Call of Duty: Warzone already has Fortnite-style glowing loot crates.

Furthermore, Warzone has several other well-established battle royale features that make the game so exciting. For instance, there’re respawn mechanics from Apex Legends and rewarding side missions from Battlefield 5. Apart from that, the game offers unique features as well as masterfully incorporated gameplay systems from the series’ multiplayer modes. This enticing mix of old and new along with the franchise’s signature quality resulted in the huge popularity of the title. During the first 24 hours, Call of Duty: Warzone attracted twice as many players as Apex Legends a year ago. It’s no surprise that Activision wants to continue the success with new titles.

According to the rumor by TheGamingRevolution on Twitter, Call of Duty 2021, which is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, might introduce Fortnite-style building mechanics. It’s rather discouraging to see the first leaks this early given the game is at least a year away from its release. There isn’t much known about the title right now, but it is expected to be a blend of the battle royale genre and regular multiplayer. Adding building mechanics to this mysterious game might further attract genre enthusiasts and reallocate Fortnite’s audience over to Call of Duty’s player pool. However, TheGamingRevolution insider acknowledges that there isn’t a specific mention of the building mechanics being exactly like in Fortnite. The game can very well end up with Battlefield-style fortifications.

I’m not sure what exactly the game is… but I’ve heard it’s some sort of mix between Battle Royale and regular multiplayer but I’m lacking specifics so far… Here’s the big thing though… I’ve heard there’s going to BUILDING LIKE FORTNITE WHATTTTTT

Other scarce details on the game include modern/near-future setting and free-to-play distribution. With that in mind, releasing a new Call of Duty battle royale game every year or two doesn’t sound like a great idea to maintain a healthy and engaged community. The route of constant updates within one single game has already proven to be efficient by the major competitors. In that regard, Activision risks dispersing its audience and losing reliability, although Call of Duty 2021 is referred to as a series’ spin-off rather than another major entry. There isn’t a single-player portion of the game planned. Instead, it’s going to be strictly online only.

According to the leak, Call of Duty 2021 will feature returning characters and Killstreaks along with the aforementioned mix of battle royale and familiar multiplayer. It sounds like this spin-off might eventually become the foundation for a standalone BR-specific experience, which will see content updates and regular support. And it might be cut off from the major entries, which would concentrate on singleplayer campaigns and signature multiplayer modes instead.
