Good Omens Season 2 Sets Jon Hamm To Return As Archangel Gabriel

Good Omens announces the return of Jon Hamm as Archangel Gabriel for its upcoming second season. The series, based on the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel of the same name, is currently filming its second season of six episodes for Amazon with leads Michael Sheen and David Tennant confirmed to return. Though initially conceived as a limited series, the fantasy comedy was renewed after Gaiman decided to expand on the first season’s narrative.

Good Omens follows Sheen’s Aziraphale, an angel from Heaven, and Tennant’s Crowley, a demon from Hell, who have developed a friendship while living on Earth, and their fight to prevent the coming of the Antichrist and the Armageddon that comes with it, to preserve their lives on Earth. Good Omens season 2 is being filmed in Scotland, with Gaiman returning to write with inspiration from the late Pratchett. The show’s first season was met with some criticism from Christian groups, denouncing its satirical take on Christianity and its use of Oscar winner Frances McDormand to voice God.

Deadline reports that Hamm will return to the series, along with new cast members Liz Carr, Quelin Sepulveda, and Shelley Conn. It was also reported that the new season will go beyond the original source material, presenting a new story and mystery for the protagonists. Gaiman also talked about his excitement about bringing the show to new places, as well as familiar ones such as London’s Soho as well as Heaven and Hell. Read Gaiman’s full quote below:

“Good Omens 2 just would not be the same without the astonishing Jon Hamm as Gabriel, everyone’s worst boss. The story that Terry Pratchett and I created all those years ago continues to take us from London’s Soho into Heaven and Hell. It’s a delight for me to bring back characters we loved (or hated) and bring in new characters, from the shiniest top floors of Heaven to the dankest basements of Hell, to love (or to hate, or to love to hate or hate to love). All of them are part of the strange and unusually beloved family of Good Omens.”

For Good Omens season 1, it was characterized by its large ensemble of big names, which, along with Hamm and McDormand, featured Nick Offerman, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Brian Cox, David Morrissey, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The first season was directed by Douglas Mackinnon, known for directing episodes of Doctor Who and Sherlock, and is confirmed to be directing for the second season. Sheen and Tennant also reprised their roles for Good Omens: Lockdown, a short that depicts the characters living through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Good Omens is one of the few contemporary examples of a fantasy comedy, a genre that defined Pratchett’s work. Most contemporary fantasy works are dark, like The Witcher and Game of Thrones, with many forgetting that the sheer absurdity of any world where angels and demons can co-exist is a premise built for more than just serious drama. With filming of the new season underway, Good Omens is sure to remind fantasy fans that the genre can be silly and unabashedly fun.
