In what can be deemed as a surprise, renders of the Google Pixel 6a have appeared on the internet thanks to an incredibly early leak. While the spotlight has been on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, now the attention may shift to another Pixel phone that is not expected until next year.

The Pixel 3A launched in 2019 as the first affordable Pixel phone. Since then, Google has followed it with successors such as the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5a. These phones are not only toned-down versions of the main Pixel smartphones, but they also cost less while still providing that Pixel experience lots of users love.

The first look at the Pixel 6a shows a device that thankfully drops the already overused design of the Pixel 4. Its appearance strongly resembles that of the new Pixel flagships, most especially the Pixel 6. The renders come from the reliable and serial leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) in partnership with 91Mobiles. The phone has a flat display with a centered punch hole for the selfie camera, while the rear has the same camera bar design as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The width of the bar appears to be smaller, but it only houses two sensors and an LED flash. There are visible antenna lines on the sides which should mean the Pixel 6a has a metal frame. The button placements are on the right side, while the SIM tray sits on the left. Unfortunately, the audio jack, which was a selling point of the Pixel 3a, is absent.

Practically A Smaller Pixel 6

One of the ways the Pixel 6 differs from the Pixel 6 Pro is by its size. The screen is 6.4 inches, while the pro model packs a 6.71-inch display. Google will once again apply the size difference to the Pixel 6a. According to the source, the display is a 6.2-inch OLED panel, and unlike the Pixel 5a with 5G, whose fingerprint scanner is on the back, this one has its own under the display.

The other specifications, such as the camera and battery capacity, are unknown, but the big question now is, “What chipset will power it?” The new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are powered by the Tensor processor, Google’s first mobile SoC. While more Tensor processors are planned, it is unknown if Google has plans to use one in the Pixel 6A or if it will stick to Qualcomm to supply the processor. The Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5a 5G are both powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset, and Google is not expected to use the same processor three times in a row.
