When it comes to the television shows we indulged in when we were younger, some characters will always remain near and dear to our hearts. Now, this might be because they were extraordinarily charismatic, or a phenomenal romantic lead, or even just a very compelling villain. When it comes to Gossip Girl, one of those characters is none other than the infamous Chuck Bass. Chuck encompasses simultaneously everything we love and hate about a leading character, but that’s part of the charm.

His love story with Blair, his character development over the six seasons the show lasted and, of course, his unique fashion sense, are all things we remember Chuck by. But some details, even die-hard fans of the show managed to miss, both about the character and the actor portraying it. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and check out ten things about Chuck Bass that you never knew!

10 It’s Gonna Be A No For Us

Looking back, it’s pretty much impossible to imagine anyone else playing Chuck Bass other than actor Ed Westwick. No matter how hard you try, picturing any other person embodying the character of Chuck just doesn’t seem right. Who else could utter the word “I’m Chuck Bass” as an answer to anything and get away with it?

As it turns out, that almost happened. When Ed Westwick auditioned for the role, the producers weren’t too inclined on casting him, since he “looked more like a serial killer than a romantic lead”. Thankfully, they changed their minds!

9 British Bass?

If you’re familiar with Ed Westwick, then you probably know that he is British, and not American. Seems pretty impossible, considering how believable his accent is, but it’s not unheard of for famous non-America actors to play several roles that demand an American accent – we’re looking at you, Christian Bale.

Curiously enough, Westwick actually modeled his accent after the character of Carlton Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. There’s one connection we weren’t expecting!

8 A Knockout Of A Hotel

One of the many things that define Chuck Bass is his unbreakable spirit and undeniable talent for business. Sure, he wasn’t always on top of his game, but Chuck always made it a point to carry on his father’s legacy and make his Hotel the best place in New York City and, eventually, the whole world.

As it turns out, the Empire Hotel, owned by Chuck himself, is very much real, and not a set, as one would suppose. Fans became so obsessed with the hotel, it actually started serving drinks named after the show – including the very secret XOXO cocktail.

7 Dog Monkey

Hardcore fans of Gossip Girl will know that the show is not just the brainchild of the writers and producers, but is actually based on a series of books penned by Cecily von Ziegesar. And just like any other book to TV adaptation, many liberties were taken, and many details and storylines were changed.

In the show, Chuck gets a dog named Monkey. This is actually a nod to the book version of Chuck, that actually gets a pet monkey! As much as we’d love to see that translated onto the screen, it’s hard to imagine the show without his little dog running around to amuse us – and often break the tension!

6 A Voicemail That Says It All

If you’re a huge Chuck Bass fan, you probably know quite a bit about him. You know his favorite food, his favorite outfit, and you even know his social security number (okay, just kidding on that one). But do you know his voicemail message? We’ll give you a hint – it’s exactly what you’d expect from Chuck.

Have you guessed it yet? Okay, we’ll stop teasing you! If you just so happen to ring this Upper East Side bad boy, you’ll be greeted by a familiar voice uttering the words “Leave me a message and I might listen to it”. Does it get any more Bass than that?

5 The V Card

Chuck was never one to hide his love for women or to express his sexuality. While he had a number of interesting, serious relationships throughout the course of the show, he also had more than enough one night stands and conquests he enjoyed bragging about.

But exactly when did Chuck’s sexual awakening take place, and who was the first girl he was with in this way? Well, brace yourselves – it was Georgina when they were both 16. Yup, the Georgina. But since it’s Gossip Girl, we’re not surprised!

4 No Man For Religion

Religion played a very big part in the plot of Gossip Girl during season five, with Blaire believing that she couldn’t be with Chuck after she made a promise to God that she would marry Louis if Chuck survived the horrible accident they were both in – an accident that ultimately resulted in Blair losing her child.

Blair firmly believed this, since her faith played a big role in her life. Chuck, on the other hand, is an atheist. He never really proclaims this to anyone, but it’s a fact that book readers are familiar with.

3 When Ed Wasn’t Chuck

There was more than one instance when Ed Westwick almost didn’t land the role of Chuck. Aside from the producers not wanting to cast him at the time because he didn’t really check all of the boxes for a male romantic interest, Ed himself almost stood in his own way.

As it turns out, Westwick first auditioned for the role of Nate. This is something we honestly can’t wrap our heads around. With his smug smirk and bad boy attitude, how could Ed ever play Nate?

2 A Familiar Voice

It’s no secret to anyone that many of the people in the main cast were also singers in real life, including Taylor Momsen (Jenny) and Leighton Meester (Blair). Producers often took advantage of the cast’s musical abilities and used their songs on the soundtrack of the show.

Ed Westwick was the star of an indie band called The Filthy Youth, and two of their songs were actually featured on an episode of season one. Now we can’t help but wish for a special episode where Chuck serenades Blair…

1 It’s A Forever Thing

Let’s be real here – the show was never truly about Gossip Girl. And it became even less so after the terrible revelation that Dan had been GG the whole time (no, we’re not over that, and we’ll probably never be). It was about the relationships between the main characters, and no relationship could compare to the one between Chuck and Blair.

When the show ended, the producers and writers admitted that they always knew Chuck and Blair would end up together, even though they made it seem like it would be a no at times. They are perfect – it’s a forever thing.
