Vice writer/director, Adam McKay, hopes that the movie changed Liz Cheney’s stance on same-sex marriage. Known as a frequent collaborator of Will Ferrell’s on outrageously raunchy comedies such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Step Brothers, McKay’s career took a drastic turn in 2015 with The Big Short, a more grounded yet still hilarious exploration of the 2008 financial crisis that triggered the United States housing bubble, which was first discovered by the eccentric hedge fund manager, Michael Burry (Christian Bale).

McKay followed that film up with an unconventional Dick Cheney biopic that chronicles the longtime politician’s rise to becoming to most powerful Vice President in American history behind George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell). Vice reteamed McKay and Bale, the chameleonic actor delivering yet another Oscar-worthy performance in the lead role. The film also stars Lily Rabe and Alison Pill as Cheney’s daughters, Liz and Mary, the latter of whom is gay, and the third act explores the rift between the two caused by Liz Cheney’s public opposition to same-sex marriage in 2014 while running for a Senate seat in Wyoming.

Now, during a recent discussion with GQ, McKay says he “likes to think” that Vice played a role in changing Liz Cheney’s views on same-sex marriage. Earlier this year, Cheney made headlines when she came out in support of gay marriage, expressing regret over her earlier opposition. Read what McKay had to say below:

The big thing that was really incredible was seeing Liz Cheney come out for gay marriage. It’s one thing for her to go against Trump. But when she came out for gay marriage, there was a part of me that was like, that can’t be an accident. I saw that on social media, people went after her because of the movie. There were a lot of people saying, “You betrayed your sister, you betrayed your family.” And it wasn’t by accident that we ended the movie with that. Because the one thing everyone said about Dick Cheney was he loved those daughters, and he loved that family. And in the end, the family shattered apart because of politics, because of that anti-gay stance that Liz took.

To see her come out for gay marriage? I don’t know what to make of that. I like to think we had something to do with that, but I have no way to… I know the Cheneys hated the movie. I know they really hated it. It wasn’t a passing annoyance. So I was quite proud of that. We hit him in the real way.

If the film really did motivate Liz Cheney to change her views on same-sex marriage like McKay believes it did, it is a real testament to how powerful an art form cinema can be and its ability to influence one to rethink deep-seated political positions. One of Vice’s final scenes shows Dick Cheney giving his support to his daughter, Liz, to publicly oppose same-sex marriage. This devastates Mary and ends up tearing the family apart.

There is no way of knowing if this particular scene had any effect on Liz, although McKay says “the Cheneys hated the movie,” so it’s not an impossibility that she saw Vice and was swayed by this heartbreaking scene. McKay’s next film, Don’t Look Up, releasing December 24 on Netflix, is intended to be a satire of the climate change crisis. If McKay has his way, that film might even cause some viewers to rethink their own positions on the controversial issue.
