The eighth anniversary of the Gravity Falls pilot episode is this June, and the animated series has been praised for its writing, humor, characters, and world-building. It tells the epic story of Dipper and Mabel Pines spending their summer with their great-uncle Stan in a sleepy Oregon town where nothing happens. (At least that’s what the residents thought.) The town is filled to the brim with the supernatural and abnormal.

Since 2012, Gravity Falls has been adored by fans of all ages around the world, so it’s no wonder that both seasons received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. If that isn’t enough to turn heads, maybe the fact that the finale set Disney XD’s all-time telecast viewing record is. One element that makes the series so enjoyable is its combination of obvious and subtle humor. Here are ten places to catch Gravity Falls breaking the fourth wall.

10 The Weirdness Bubbles

Dipper and Wendy pass through a number of Bill Cipher’s Weirdness Bubbles in “Weirdmageddon Part 1.” The bubbles are unpredictable capsules of madness that can alter reality in infinite ways, making them the perfect place to draw a connection between our world and the two-dimensional world of Gravity Falls.

For a few seconds, Dipper and Wendy transform into live-action versions of themselves. The actors appearing on screen are the voice actors behind Dipper and Wendy, Jason Ritter and Linda Cardellini, dressed as their characters.

9 Soos’s Fanfic

There’s nothing like a fourth wall break that directly references the writing of wishful fan fiction. This is exactly what happens in the twelfth episode of season two, “A Tale of Two Stans.”

After 31 episodes of buildup, Grunkle Stan and his secret twin brother reveal their much-needed backstory, explaining how the Mystery Shack came to be, McGucket’s connection with the supernatural, the fake IDs in Stan’s office, and how Ford managed to stay hidden all these years. Soos crosses his arms, saying, “I’m hoping all this aligns exactly with my fanfic, Stan. If not, I will be very disappointed.”

8 What Could Go Wrong?

Gravity Falls has a brilliant way of sneaking fourth wall breaks into dialogue, such as when Dipper and Mabel rummage through a closet to find a board game in “The Last Mabelcorn.”

The twins find “What Could Go Wrong?: The Game.” The box says the last players never made it out alive, which is a clear nod to Jumanji, but that’s not the best part about this scene. Dipper figures the board game could be a good way to pass the time and says, “This should take up the next 21 minutes,” referencing the runtime of a normal Gravity Falls episode.

7 Rumble’s Life Meter

If “Fight Fighters” taught us anything, it’s that one should never attempt to bring a video game character to life, no matter how cool the magic cheat code might look. Dipper unleashes the ultimate power of Rumble McSkirmish to defend him against Robbie, but the pixelated bodyguard has a mind of his own and does more harm than good.

During Dipper and Rumble’s showdown, Soos climbs a tree and tries to lower the energy in Rumble’s health bar by swatting at it. In this scene, Soos seems to be aware that he exists in a work of fiction where health can be analyzed with a bar.

6 The Northwest Cover-Up

It’s no secret that the writers, illustrators, and producers behind Gravity Falls worked to make the series detail-oriented. What some fans may not know is that frames of the show can get so detailed that they contain personalized jokes from the production team that the casual viewer is unlikely to notice.

In “Irrational Treasure,” for example, if the viewer were to pause the episode while Dipper reads Journal 3’s excerpt on how town founder Nathaniel Northwest is a fraud, they would also learn that the author believes “writing jokes for cartoons is more important than sleep.” We hope the artist behind this particular fourth wall break knows we heard their cry for help.

5 Duck-tective’s Twin Brother

The existence of Duck-tective’s secret twin brother is revealed in “Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons” when the Pines are watching the season finale with Soos and Grenda. Sound familiar?

Mabel is unimpressed with the plot twist, and Soos says he predicted it a year ago. Just two episodes prior, Stan’s twin brother appeared for the first time. The character’s reactions to the Duck-tective finale serve as a fourth wall break referencing the fan theories about Grunkle Stan having a twin brother that surfaced long before “Not What He Seems” aired.

4 Alex’s Appearances

Alex Hirsch, creator and executive producer, is the inspiration behind Dipper Pines, and Gravity Falls is based on the summer adventures he and his sister dreamed of. He also has his own character in his show. No, it’s not Dipper.

Alex is first seen juggling on a unicycle surrounded by crocodiles in “Bottomless Pit!” The cartoon version of him appears in seven episodes and in the main titles. Alex is often drawn wearing a red flannel shirt, a homage to the real Alex Hirsch’s good-luck-flannel jacket and flannel shirt collection. This fourth wall break/cameo would easily slip past anyone who isn’t familiar with the show’s creator.

3 Mabel’s Favorite Part

The Gravity Falls theme song is merely 41 seconds long, but the sound of the whimsical opening notes is sure to grab any true Gravity Falls fan’s attention. Mabel rightly appreciates it as well.

Grunkle Stan asks Dipper and Mabel if they want to see what else is on TV at the beginning of season one’s eleventh episode, “Little Dipper.” Both twins agree, and Mabel says that her favorite part is the theme song. The scene then cuts to the main theme of the show.

2 Anti-Social Shut-Ins

The season two episode “Little Gift Shop of Horrors” deviates from the standard structure of a Gravity Falls episode. On a dark and stormy night at the Mystery Shack, Grunkle Stan tells the horrifying “Tales Designed To Sell [His] Merchandise.” One short story involves Mabel confronting her fear of Claymation.

The story is about animation, so the show’s artists took the chance to crack a self-deprecating joke. Stan assures Mabel that there’s nothing to be afraid of because the monsters are “just tiny clay figures moved around one frame at a time by an antisocial shut-in.”

Soos clarifies, “Those people are called animators.”

1 Defending Duck-tective

In “Dungeons, Dungeons, and More Dungeons,” Grunkle Stan, Soos, Mabel, and Grenda excitedly prepare for the Duck-tective season finale. Ford criticizes Stan for being so excited to watch the finale of a kid’s show. Stan snaps back and defends Duck-tective as a series with “a big mystery element and a lot of humor that goes over kids’ heads.”

Gravity Falls is a Y7-rated Disney production that may look like an elementary children’s show, but in reality, it’s filled with complex plot lines and has gained a huge older fanbase over the years. The line manages to do exactly what Stan says – go over kids’ heads – while referencing Gravity Falls itself. It has to be one of the best-executed fourth wall breaks in the history of fourth wall breaks.
