Derek’s sister Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) has become a bigger part of Grey’s Anatomy in recent seasons, as her love life and professional dreams have both been explored. Shondaland fans will remember the tragedies that Amelia experienced as a doctor on Private Practice. It seemed like maybe she could create a new, better life for herself in Seattle.

Of course, this is Grey’s Anatomy, and everyone has a lot of problems on a regular basis. But Amelia’s character, in particular, seems to have been poorly developed. Here are some ways that this character got worse over the 16 seasons of the show.

10 Amelia Never Stops Feeling Sorry For Herself

Self-pity could be Amelia’s middle name, and this is something that never gets any better as the show goes on.

It’s frustrating as a fan to see a TV character acting the same way no matter what episode they appear in, and that’s the case with Amelia. She alternates between whining and closing herself off from the other characters, and neither decision paints her in a very good light.

9 Her First Instinct Is To Disappear, Which Is Annoying

Amelia and Owen Hunt’s (Kevin McKidd) romance seems so promising. They were both due to fall in love and have it last, and fans wanted them to have some happiness in their lives.

Unfortunately, things fell apart, and Amelia makes things even more difficult by disappearing. That’s not the way that someone should act when they just tied the knot. It’s annoying that her first instinct is always to peace out and leave other people to deal with the fall-out.

8 She’s Wishy-Washy About Being A Mom When The Writers Should Make This More Clear

It’s horrible that Amelia’s baby didn’t survive on Private Practice, but in recent seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, she could have had the chance to get pregnant again.

Instead of a straightforward storyline where Amelia becomes a mother, she has seemed very wishy-washy about the whole thing. She thinks that she’s pregnant with Owen’s baby, they’re both thrilled, and then she’s actually happy when it turns out that she’s not pregnant. She says they could hold off for a while, but then why did she want to rush into getting pregnant after they got married? The writers should definitely make this more clear.

7 Instead Of Giving Her Interesting Character Motivation, Amelia Is Just Selfish

It would be great if fans could tune into the show and see Amelia making decisions based on some kind of motivation, from climbing the career ladder to finding true love. It’s satisfying when characters succeed.

Instead, Amelia is just selfish and she also seems very immature. She never changes and it feels very dull to watch her only thinking about herself.

6 Her Brain Tumor Is Supposed To Explain Her Actions, And That Feels Too Easy

Grey’s Anatomy 10 Ways Amelia Got Worse And Worse

When Amelia is diagnosed with a brain tumor, this is supposed to be an explanation for her wild and weird behavior. It turns out that she has had this for a decade so that’s why she acts the way that she does.

Is this really such a smart storyline, though? It definitely feels like an easy excuse. Has this storyline really been in the works for several seasons? It seems like Amelia could have had something else going on. This is one way that she has gotten worse as the show has progressed.

5 Her Relationship With Derek Was Never Properly Developed

Back when Derek was still around, Amelia would complain about how Derek didn’t talk to her, and they definitely didn’t have a good relationship. It’s fair to say that their sibling relationship was never properly developed.

Amelia seemed jealous of him and she also resented him for ignoring her. It felt like she was always blaming him and they could have just had an open conversation instead.

4 She Approaches Every New Love Interest The Same Way, Which Isn’t Interesting

Whether it’s Owen or Link (Chris Carmack), Amelia approaches every new love interest the same way. She always wants to just keep things casual and she really freaks out when it seems like it’s’ going to be more serious than that.

This isn’t very interesting to watch and feels like a character flaw. It would have been nice if she had been open to settling down with Link right away as she clearly felt connected to him. This would have felt like some real growth.

3 Her Character Often Seems Too Similar To Meredith And Cristina

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) are known for being strong, independent, and sometimes unfriendly people. They’re the direct opposite of much more cheerful characters like Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).

Another way that Amelia has gotten worse on Grey’s Anatomy? She often seems too similar to Meredith and Cristina. She’s negative and pessimistic like they are, and she doesn’t have a lot of unique characteristics. Amelia just doesn’t stand out.

2 When She Does Have A Baby, The Writers Decide That She Should Still Be Confused

Grey’s Anatomy 10 Ways Amelia Got Worse And Worse

Amelia spends a lot of time being confused on Grey’s Anatomy as she seems to have trouble making big decisions or following her heart. Another problem with this character? When she does have a baby, as in the current season, the writers decide that things should still be super confusing and weird for her.

Amelia doesn’t know if her baby is Owen or Link’s, and that seems like a strange creative decision. Why not just make it clear that it’s Link’s from the beginning?

1 It’s Boring To Watch Amelia Never Take Responsibility

No matter what’s going on in Amelia’s life, she never takes responsibility. It’s always someone else’s fault, even if it’s the fault of the universe. She’s mad that her fiance and baby were taken away from her, and rightly so, but she resents other doctors for their success.

Amelia also gets angry at Meredith and says that because of her, she didn’t get the opportunity to see Derek before he died and have that closure. That seems unfair and harsh, as things happened very quickly and there really wouldn’t have been time. But this is yet another way that Amelia has gotten worse and worse.
