There have been countless love stories over 17 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and each main character has fallen in love, experienced heartbreak, and moved on (or had trouble moving on and gone back to the partner they can’t forget about). There are many surprising pairs on the show and almost every episode gives fans some romantic moments to swoon over.

While many break-ups on Grey’s Anatomy are upsetting and painful to watch, others seem confusing and don’t make much sense, and fans wonder why these couples split up in the first place.

8 Lexie Wanted To Be A Priority Over Mark’s Child

When Mark said that Lexie shouldn’t make him “choose” his daughter Sloan over her, Lexie said, “Why, because you’ll choose her?” and then said that they were breaking up.

Lexie and Mark’s relationship shines in many episodes but this was a strange moment for the popular couple. This was a horrible reason for them to break up, as of course Mark loved his child and was going to make her a priority, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t have strong feelings for Lexie.

7 Why Did Derek Pick Addison Over Meredith?

At the end of season 1, Meredith found out that Derek was married to Addison, and later on in the show, she asked him to choose between them. Derek picked Addison, which shocked fans and was definitely a surprise to Meredith as well as the neurosurgeon had been adamant that there was nothing worth saving between him and Addison.

It was also one of the worst reasons for a Grey’s Anatomy break-up, as Derek felt guilty about falling in love with Meredith and he felt obligated to try to make his marriage work. It was obvious that it was over, though, and no one understood his reasoning.

6 Owen Breaking Up With Emma

In season 10, Owen dated Emma, and once he realized that she really liked him, it seemed like this could be a strong and healthy relationship.

Owen and Cristina’s relationship was confusing at times, and Emma got caught up in their on-again and off-again romance as she and Owen got ready to live together. Owen then shocked viewers by sleeping with Cristina and breaking up with Emma. No one was sure why he did this, as they seemed to have a promising future.

5 Stephanie Broke Up With Kyle With A Confusing Letter

Stephanie and Kyle met when he was admitted into the hospital in season 12, and after they began a relationship, he came back for surgery because he had a hand tremor. In the episode “You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side,” she broke up with him in a letter, saying that she knows what it’s like to be in the hospital for a long period of time, and she would rather be a doctor instead.

4 Eliza Ghosted Arizona After Being Fired

Grey’s Anatomy fans got to know Eliza in season 13 when she began working at the hospital as a consultant. Viewers wondered just how intense her time on the show would be since she was supposed to look at how the surgeries were conducted.

Eliza and Arizona dated for a while, and their break-up made no sense, as Eliza ghosted Arizona after she learned that she was being let go from the hospital. She definitely owed Arizona an explanation or at least some closure, and viewers wondered why she had to ignore Arizona.

3 Callie Dumped Penny After Moving To NYC For Her

After dating Penny for a while, Callie decided to move to New York City with her, so it was definitely surprising when Callie broke up with her. She said that she wanted to be closer to Sophia and that she didn’t want to be in a long-distance situation.

Fans loved Callie and Arizona together and felt that when Arizona was leaving the show, it made sense for her and Callie to reunite. But Penny and Callie’s break-up seemed random and out of nowhere, as they didn’t seem to have any major problems and this break-up wasn’t given much time or explanation.

2 Meredith Had Commitment Issues, But Derek Knew That

Although Derek and Meredith found their way back to each other once he admitted that his marriage was over, she had commitment issues so they broke up.

This breakup didn’t make any sense, as Meredith and Derek are a popular Grey’s Anatomy couple for so many reasons, including the fact that they really understood each other. Derek knew that Meredith had trouble being vulnerable in her personal life thanks to the pain and loss she had always known. It seems like they could have stayed together and worked it out, or slowed down the pace of their relationship. Given the epic nature of their later relationship, this split seems strange.

1 Owen Wanted To Divorce Cristina Because Of The Plane Crash Settlement

In season 9, Owen wanted to divorce Cristina, and then she discovered that he did that because he was working on the settlement that the survivors of the plane crash would get. He knew that the lawyers wanted their marriage to be a conflict of interest so they could get away with not giving anyone money.

While Owen’s heart was in the right place here, this was not the real reason why he knew that their marriage was finished, and he could have handled this much differently. Owen and Cristina had hurt each other too much and they did need to break up since they didn’t feel the same way about starting a family.
