GTA 6 Will Be Announced When Rockstar Is Ready, Says Take-Two CEO

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of gaming’s great white whales and according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, it won’t be announced until Rockstar is ready.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is probably on the way, but neither Rockstar nor its parent company Take-Two Interactive really want to signal when it will happen. In fact, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is leaving it in Rockstar’s court as to when it wants to announce Grand Theft Auto 6.

Given that it has been almost 8 years since Grand Theft Auto 5 released and nearly 3 years since Red Dead Redemption 2, many are hopeful for Grand Theft Auto 6 to release sooner rather than later. A new job listing has also indicated that a GTA 6 trailer may be inbound, but it’s entirely unknown if there’s an actual correlation.

During the recent Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference (via Reddit), where Strauss Zelnick also noted that Rockstar isn’t interested in simple ports, Zelnick fielded a question about GTA 6. Zelnick seemed to have a pretty standard statement prepared, but has indicated that he’s not going to be the one who gives any real details on the new title. “Rockstar hasn’t announced any new titles for the market, and when there’s an announcement to be made, it’ll come from Rockstar,” he said.

Rockstar seems to have been given an unheard of level of trust from its owner. Even though it’s likely Zelnick would be clued in on when something like a GTA 6 reveal will happen, he has previously indicated that he’s content to let Rockstar operate however it pleases. Given the fact that GTA 5 sold like crazy last year, it’s not hard to imagine that Zelnick thinks Rockstar has some sort of Midas touch and doesn’t want to interfere. Should Grand Theft Auto 6 actually come to fruition, it’s likely it would be announced in the fall. Rockstar has announced its last 2 non-remastered games (Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 ) in the fall, usually around October.

This typically ends up aligning with some sort of Take-Two investors call, but it’s a mystery as to whether or not that’ll happen again. To add even more speculation, there was a roughly 3 year gap between GTA 5 being released and Red Dead Redemption 2 being announced. With October signaling the 3 year anniversary of Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s not impossible for a Grand Theft Auto 6 announcement to hit around that same time. Of course, GTA 5 is getting a new port in the second half of 2021, so it’s possible that Rockstar will want to avoid taking the spotlight away from that. On top of that, a rumored collection of the PS2-era GTA games is expected to launch this year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of GTA 3. If all of that is happening, maybe Rockstar will tie it all together with a Grand Theft Auto 6 reveal, but it’s really anyone’s guess.
