Grand Theft Auto has been making headlines for the past seven days following the launch of Rockstar’s remastered trilogy. The Definitive Edition, as Rockstar calls it, has spruced up GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas for a 2021 audience. The thing is, most of those to have played the collection aren’t all that impressed. The PC version of the game was unplayable for the first few days, and modders are already hard at work fixing its many problems.

Modders will need to be wary of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive. The studio has been issuing DMCA Takedowns left and right this year ahead of The Trilogy’s arrival. One of the biggest stories to emerge from Take-Two’s takedowns is a project that has reverse-engineered the source code of GTA 3 and Vice City. The project improved and added to various elements of the game, and allowed those who use it to create forts for Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and PS Vita.

The group was hit with a takedown and then a lawsuit after it returned and its creators claimed they had done nothing wrong. VGC now reports the group responsible for the projects, which are named re3 and reVC, still refuses to give up. Its creators are fighting back against Take-Two’s filing which means the case will now go to court unless something changes moving forward.

“Defendants respectfully request that the Court enter judgement in their favour and against Plaintiff, denying Plaintiff all relief sought herein,” a statement in response to Take-Two’s lawsuit reads. The modders also deny that Take-Two has suffered and continues to suffer due to their work’s distribution. Even though they have reverse-engineered the original games’ source code, it doesn’t contain any assets created by Rockstar. That means anyone who has it still needs a copy of GTA 3 or Vice City if they want to use it.

Standing up to a company as big as Take-Two because you believe you’re in the right is a bold move, and will likely be a very expensive one. Take-Two likely banked on the modders backing down when threatened with a lawsuit due to the cost that comes with fighting a battle in court. The group of 14 modders is standing its ground though, and as it stands this issue will be one that is settled in court.
