Zynga is inviting players to a week of anniversary events in Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells for the mobile game’s first-year celebration. The week of festivities will include in-game gifts, events, sweepstakes, and new content. A little over a year has passed since Zynga first revealed the game in May 2020. Since then, players have faced its 2,000 puzzle levels inspired by the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter mobile game is a matching adventure game inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter universe that features the original soundtrack and voiceover recordings from the films. The game brings fans along on a “mobile retelling” of Harry Potter’s experience. When it was announced, the game found itself in a difficult position due to the anticipation around a different Harry Potter game, Hogwarts Legacy – now delayed to 2022. However, Zynga’s title has fared well on mobile devices since then.
The Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells anniversary celebrations begin today and will continue throughout the week. The first is an in-game, zoo-themed event commemorating Dudley Dursley’s birthday. Players are invited to compile collectible “presents” and earn reward chests while following the game’s traditional match-3 model – similar to the puzzles in Candy Crush Saga – for a chance to earn even more rewards in a “serpentine” style event. On September 23, players will be given the chance to engage with Hogwarts traditions, such as a House Pride Event that involves completing puzzles to earn points on behalf of their house. Results will be tracked on a leaderboard, pitting the houses against one another, similarly to how the houses compete throughout the school year in Harry Potter books and films.
In addition to the in-game events, any player who logs-in between September 22 and 24 will receive anniversary gifts to “further celebrate the occasion.” Zynga is also hosting giveaways and sweepstakes on their social media platforms to celebrate the game’s anniversary. Prizes include an “anniversary prize package with in-game currency, items, power-up bundles, and more.” While the developer likely has its hands full with its Harry Potter festivities, Zynga is also behind the Star Wars: Hunters mobile game slated for a 2022 release.
This was likely a busy month for Zynga and Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, but events like this one show they’re on top of their current titles as much as they are in development on their forthcoming ones. The company revealed a teaser for Farmville 3 this week, the latest installment in the former-Facebook-exclusive that Zynga shut down in December 2020. The company appears to be reaching across several different genres, as well as juggling some hefty licenses in the process.
