Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from Square Enix sees you taking on the role of Star-Lord and leading the guardians in a brand new story. Throughout the game, you’ll be tasked with making multiple decisions, some of which can have drastic consequences. The first chapter introduces you to a lot of different mechanics within the game, so it’s time to find your space feet and hit the ground running.
For this guide, we’re going to cover everything in Chapter One — A Risky Gamble — including where to find all items, outfits, collectibles, and complete optional objectives.
Note: This guide is based on our own playthrough and will be updated if we discover any additional collectibles.
Aboard the Milano
Drax will tell you that Gamora wants to see you on the bridge, but you can explore the Milano and talk to your crewmates first. You can view all of the crew’s rooms and interact with various objects.
When speaking with the various characters you can choose what to say, for example — whether to reassure Groot or spook him, but these decisions only appear to affect the conversation that occurs rather than having any lasting impact.
When you’re done exploring, head to the cockpit and speak to Gamora. When you’re ready to progress, interact with your chair and enter the code ‘0451’ when prompted to.
In the Quarantine Zone
Once your team exits the Milano, turn around and shoot the strange structure with the yellow box sticking out of it, and afterward, you can grab the Basic Components on the floor.
Turn towards your left, jump down and then to the next platform, and on your left, there are some more Basic Components you can grab.
Follow this path back towards Rocket, grabbing the pile of Basic Components on your left as you pass them.
Continue Rocket — if you put your visor on, your compass will direct you towards your intended destination at the top of the screen.
There are destructible items you can shoot around here, some of which do nothing really, while others will result in funny reactions from the characters. For example, shooting out the white substance high on your left will cause some wreckage to fall, scaring the guys.
Before you enter into the circular passageway, grab the Basic Components on your right, then continue through for an interesting view.
Continue following Rocket and Groot, and you’ll encounter your first conversational prompt.
After the second jump that requires you to double jump, you’ll find some Basic Components right in front of you. Afterward, head through the narrow gap and follow Rocket to the right when you emerge at the other end.
Follow Rocket and Groot up the platform and then slide down. When Rocket takes the path on the left, he will comment that the path on the right is a dead end. (If you go down this path you’ll find out he was right and get a funny bit of banter for your trouble.)
Follow Rocket inside the structure, but take an immediate and left and pick up the Archive at the far end. After reading it, turn around and continue through the structure.
Outside, Rocket and Groot will take a path to the left, if you choose to go forward instead, the floor will collapse and you can find some Advanced Components.
Before you follow Rocket down the next platform, make sure you grab the Advanced Components to the right of the spikey wall.
Move towards Rocket and some debris will fall, after which you will be prompted to blast your way through.
Once inside, destroy the Parasite Nest to begin a competition with Rocket to see who can destroy the most of these creepy, maggot nests. Winning this competition will earn you an achievement/trophy.
Continue forwards and after you fall through the floor, grab the Basic Components on your left.
Take the tunnel on your right, and in the next room, destroy the white substance on the right and then grab the Ravager Comm Bracelet Collectible it was hiding.
Shoot out the white stuff from around the door and then follow this path, sliding down into a new room. Defeat the green blobby things in here — a swift boot will sort them out — then go up the stairs and jump up the platforms to the next level.
Grab the Basic Components on your left as you progress forward, then blast the white substance to get through.
Once out, travel across the narrow ledge and then open the Guardians menu when prompted to ask Groot to grow a bridge across the gap.
On the other side, grab the Basic Components on your left, then follow Rocket and Groot round to the right and quickly destroy the nests before Rocket can.
Destroy the white stuff in the distance to your right, then use Groot to build a bridge and get across. Head over to the next platform and when you climb up to the next level, grab the Advanced Components on your right.
Continue climbing up and you will see a platform on your left, you can double jump over to grab some Basic Components from there.
Jump back and continue forward. After the cutscene, you can check out the Kree Medikit from on top of the blue container in front of you.
You can find the Charged Battery you need on top of the breakable substance at the back of the area, above the dead batteries. Blast the white stuff away, scan the battery, and then grab it and take it to Rocket.
After defeating the blobs, head up the pathway that they opened up. Once you get to the other side, follow the path to the left and shoot out the nest on the far right as it comes into view.
Continue up the arm, and as you pass the debris on your left, face left and shoot out the destructible white stuff and jump over to find two more nests to destroy. Jump over, grab the Advanced Components, shoot out the debris behind you, then continue back onto the main path. Grab some more Advanced Components from in front of you as you catch up with Rocket.
Jump across to where Rocket is and shoot out the eye, before asking Groot to make a bridge over.
This next room is full of nests so start taking out as many as you can to ensure Rocket doesn’t beat you. Once done, head over to Rocket and Groot in the opening and continue onwards.
Grab the Basic Components on your right before following Rocket to the over to the next platform. Install the Thumper and defeat the enemy waves.
After investing in your first ability point, head through the hole at the back of the area and continue onwards.
Run forward and have Groot create a bridge at the far end. Follow Rocket, and after the little accident continue along the path. You can find some Basic Components in front of you, hidden behind some debris, but you’ll want to head left after Rocket and concentrate on quickly shooting out as many nests as you can.
Afterward, follow Rocket over to the next platform, then jump/climb up to the next level. Once here, take a right, doubling back on yourself instead of jumping to the next platform — you’ll find some more Advanced Components and a nest to shoot.
Return to the main path and jump to the next platform and turn around to shoot the nest below where you just were. Continue following Rocket and when he takes a left, move forward towards the dead-end and drop down on the left to grab the Basic Components. Head back and follow Rocket to the next area. When you reach the turbine, send Rocket through the drone tunnel by scanning it first, then asking Rocket to go in.
Once Rocket gets the turbine open, go in and shoot the nests, then shoot the debris from the far end to get the next part open.
Follow Rocket through and you’ll fall into a sliding tunnel — steer clear of debris that’s in your way and keep your guns ready to shoot the nest.
After landing on the ship, run across and double jump near the end to make the gap and haul yourself up.
Run along the platform before heading into the next area. Destroy the nest when the lights come up. If you beat Rocket’s score, this is when you’ll unlock the trophy/achievement.
In the next area, duck through the hole on your right and grab the Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Outfit for Groot.
Head back out and follow Rocket and Groot. You can grab the Basic Components by jumping on the ledge to your left at the end of the path, then jump left again from there, go through the hole and grab the pile of Basic Components on the walkway.
Jump down to your right and you’ll find some Basic Components on your left, then grab more Basic Components at the back of this area, to the right.
Return to Rocket and Groot and interact with the side of the door on your left to get it to open. In the next room, Rocket can give you some Perks at the Workbench. Once you’re done purchasing Perks, shoot out the white stuff using your new Rapid Reload Perk and head on through.
After falling down the hole and dealing with the weird new type of enemies, move forwards and jump up to the top platform to reach the next level. Turn around and then shoot out the destructible stuff using your new perk to find the Spinal Control Unit Collectible.
Head back across and then travel into the next area. Before you climb through the window, go to the far right to grab some Basic Components.
Once you jump out, you’ll be thrown into battle with a new threat and reunite with some of your companions.
Afterward, shoot out the white matter above the hanging block, then instruct Gamora to cut the cable. Once you have the block, you can take it to the far side of the room and use it to reach some Advanced Components.
Ask Drax to then move the block where it should go (there are blue markers to show you where to place it) and jump up. Before heading through the doorway, move to your left and jump across to where you shot away the white stuff previously. Here you’ll find some Advanced Components.
In the next room, look to your left behind some crates for some Basic Components then head down the path to your right and grab the Basic Components on your way.
On the lower level of this area, you can find an Archive on top of a crate.
Head towards the door and grab the Basic Components on your way, before sliding down to the next area and regrouping with everyone. Don’t panic when you all start to wipe, this is so you’ll be introduced to the huddle mechanic. Afterward, defeat the enemies.
Scan the box to the left of the locked door and have Rocket use it to open the way. Follow the Guardians down past the Milano until you get a new cutscene.
Destroy all of the crates and then use Groot’s Guardian ability to snare the beast.
After a quick escape sequence in the Milano, that’s the end of Chapter One complete!
