Here’s Guillermo del Toro’s Patrón tequila explained, and if it is still available to buy. Long before designing his own Patrón tequila, Guillermo del Toro made his directorial debut with the low-budget vampire movie Cronos. This set up many of his recurring themes and concepts, including a sympathetic monster at its core. In the years since del Toro has often switched between more blockbuster fare like Pacific Rim and the Hellboy movies to personal projects like Pan’s Labyrinth or The Shape Of Water.

Guillermo del Toro’s next movie will be the all-star noir thriller Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette. Of course, del Toro has many other interests outside of filmmaking and has worked in other mediums. Guillermo del Toro co-wrote The Strain trilogy of novels with Chuck Hogan, which was later adapted into a series for FX. He also collaborated with Hideo Kojima on the video game sequel Silent Hills, which was infamously canceled by Konami in 2015.

His creative endeavors outside filmmaking have even extended to alcohol. In 2017, a special Guillermo del Toro tequila was created in collaboration with Patrón Spirits. Called Patrón x Guillermo del Toro, this was a blend of Anejo tequilas that were aged for at least five years in used oak barrels with a sweet, fruity taste. Even more notable than the tequila itself is the box it was packaged in, with Guillermo del Toro working with artist Guy Davis to craft a beautifully designed package. Said box has a Day Of The Dead motif, which opens up to reveal the tequila bottle inside, which is hanging upside down and resembles a ribcage.

Director Guillermo del Toro’s Patrón tequila package also contained two bottles, with a smaller 100ml bottle containing an orange liqueur. Patrón x Guillermo del Toro was a special project for the filmmaker, and bottles averaged around a $399 asking price. Sadly, this was very much a limited edition project, and Patrón no longer produces del Toro’s tequila.

Its also unlikely this Guillermo del Toro tequila will re-enter production either, despite receiving good reviews for both its taste and unique packaging. The Patrón x Guillermo del Toro box itself has become something of a collector’s item and while it’s possible to buy it used online, finding one that comes with the tequila inside is next to impossible. While some celebrities loan their names to alcohol brands because there’s good money involved, this was clearly a labor of love for del Toro, and if anything, its limited run probably only made it more special to him.
