Hades How to Renovate the Underworld (& Why)

Hades has come to consoles, and that’s a great reason to get battling – and renovating – through the Underworld. Players have numerous options for progression, from meta-leveling through the Mirror of Night to in-run building through boons and temporary bonuses. But besides focusing on empowering Zagreus, Supergiant has given players an unusual option: to influence the structure of the dungeon itself through the Underworld Renovations mechanic.

The House Contractor, an NPC which sits to the right of Hades’ desk in the main hub area, has an expansive menu of renovations they can perform. Many of these Work Orders are cosmetic, changes that add or improve furnishings in the House of Hades. What’s more important to pay attention to are the renovations that add to or enhance the rooms encountered during a run, because they can meaningfully improve the player’s chance of completing an escape attempt. These upgrades are yet another way in which Hades redefines what a rogue-like can be.

Different resources are required to purchase renovations from the House Contractor, depending on the level of the upgrade. Early purchases, such as fountain chamber upgrades for Tartarus, Asphodel, and Elysium, are made with gemstones, which can be found throughout the Underworld. Later upgrades will cost diamonds, a much rarer resource that can be obtained in a variety of ways. Six early diamonds are rewarded for using each Infernal arm to defeat the Bone Hydra for the first time. A total of 120 more can be earned by defeating the Hydra at each successive Heat level, a difficulty modifier unlocked after conquering Hades for the first time.

Why Renovating Hades’ Underworld is Important

Underworld renovations are a satisfying, and effective, way to enhance the chances of reaching Hades’ final boss. Each major change introduces potentially pivotal resources into the randomly generated runs. The fountain chamber upgrades and their Purified and Holy enhancements help to offset the scarcity of health restoration, while Plunder and Urns of Wealth improve resource rewards, which aids in meta-progression. Plunder introduces Infernal Troves, treasure chests that initiate timed battles in exchange for generous amounts loot or health, while Urns of Wealth pay homage to Legend of Zelda by adding breakable pots which contain Charon’s Obols, the in-run currency.

Perhaps Hades’ most essential renovation for ensuring high-quality runs is the Regional Keepsake Collection, which adds the option to swap keepsakes between Underworld biomes. Keepsakes are equipped items that grant a variety of stat benefits or determine the next boon encountered. So it’s possible to influence a build by choosing a certain god’s keepsake, obtaining a high-level boon from them, and then switching keepsakes later to guarantee the desired pairing of boons. This can also make it easier to find duo boons between gods of the player’s choosing, a chance that can’t be passed up.

Then there’s the Rod of Fishing, a late-game Work Order which gives Zagreus the ability to fish in certain spots throughout a run. Fishing activates a short minigame wherein various fish can be caught, which are then exchangeable for resources with the Head Chef in the lounge’s kitchen. When short on resources, or just looking to relax for a minute, casting a line with the Rod of Fishing can offer some much-needed recuperation between Hades’ difficult encounters. All in all, renovations are an effective and engaging meta-progression system, and should absolutely be sought out to aid Zagreus’ Underworld trials.
