Halloween How Long Michael Myers Really Had The Thorn Curse

One of the Halloween franchise’s most convoluted subplots involves the Cult of Thorn, which had apparently been controlling Michael Myers for decades. With most movie franchises, the longer they run, the more hard to follow they become. This is even true for slasher movies, as each entry tries harder to find a reason for its plot to exist other than just because the studio wanted to make another. The Halloween franchise was very much a victim of this, making the decision to retcon the sequels for Halloween 2018 understandable.

The plot confusion of the Halloween series has its roots back to Halloween 2 in 1981, when John Carpenter made a decision he came to highly regret: making Laurie Strode the sister of Michael Myers. By doing that, once Halloween 4 wrote Laurie out, the new primary victim had to be another relative, as that precedent had been established. With Halloween 5, the infamous Man in Black storyline was introduced, and even producers have admitted that they didn’t know the character’s real identity.

Needless to say, when Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers came along to answer that question in 1995, it did so in underwhelming fashion, along with revealing that Michael himself had been operating under the direction of the Cult of Thorn, not of his own free will. How long was he under their control? That’s where things get tricky.

Halloween: How Long Michael Myers Really Had The Thorn Curse

Taken at face value, the lore revealed in Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers – moreso in the producer’s cut – suggests that Michael was cursed by the Cult of Thorn as a child, and has been possessed by the Thorn spirit ever since. This would explain his superhuman ability to take damage and survive. The problem is, that plot wasn’t in the plans early on, and it shows. For one, Thorn cult lore says the cursed one is compelled to kill any family they have on Halloween. Yet, Michael only killed one sister in 1963, not his whole family. He also went dormant for fifteen years until 1978, which also runs counter to the Thorn rules.

Adding onto that, since it was an idea thought up late in the franchise, there’s absolutely no hints at it being present in the early films. A dedicated fan could try to come up with excuses for that, but it takes some stretching, such as asserting the Samhain on the chalkboard in Halloween 2 is a tie to the cult. Then there’s all the other people Michael kills that have nothing to do with his supposed Thorn mission. It’s a ridiculously thrown together plot, and while Halloween 6 stresses that Michael was cursed since 1963, the only thing that really makes sense would be if the cult somehow found and cursed Michael between movies.

Opportunities for them to do this would’ve been during his coma after Halloween 2 or when he was resting at the hermit’s shack after Halloween 4, which could go a way toward explaining his increasingly unexplained levels of strength, such as shoving a thumb through a man’s head or impaling a man with a shotgun. It could also help explain the sudden psychic connection Jamie Lloyd and Michael have. But again, that runs counter to the Thorn lore. All in all, there’s no real answer that would fully make sense, making it easy to see why Halloween H20 just threw the whole thing out.
