A recent datamine of Halo Infinite suggests that completing the upcoming Halo story campaign will not unlock any armor for its multiplayer mode. The upcoming installment in the iconic franchise comes in two packages, offering its multiplayer under a free-to-play model which released earlier this month, as well as Halo Infinite’s paid campaign mode, expected to release on December 8.

Developer 343 Industries staggered the launch of Halo Infinite’s two parts to success, surprising and delighting many by making the multiplayer available ahead of players’ expectations. Shortly following the surprise release of the game’s multiplayer on November 15, the highly-anticipated title quickly bested previous Xbox Game Studio’s records, becoming the most successful title for the developer on Steam. In under three hours, Halo Infinite hit 162k concurrent players on Steam alone, beating numbers held by the release of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Forza Horizon 5.

Sharing a datamine leak on Twitter, a post from user ChazJackal suggests the Halo Infinite campaign won’t unlock armor for its multiplayer. The screenshots show rewards players can unlock for completing the game’s campaign, however, the list only contains armor coatings, emblems, weapon charms, and a pose. This suggests that new armor pieces for the game’s multiplayer mode may not be obtainable from completing Halo Infinite’s story, and would only be unlocked either through microtransactions or via the Battle Pass. However, considering that the game’s multiplayer is currently in beta, the information reportedly revealed in the datamine may be subject to change before Halo Infinite’s campaign mode launches early next month.

This leak has upset lots of fans, many of whom were already displeased with cosmetic microtransactions in Halo Infinite Season 1 totaling over $1000, as this would mean much of the game’s customization options would require players spend money to unlock them. Some fans, however, were left unsurprised by the new information, sharing the sentiment that 343’s decision to monetize the game’s multiplayer was inevitable considering it is now free-to-play. As developers at 343 have continued to ask the Halo community for feedback, and have previously made changes to the game’s Battle Pass system as a result, it is possible that more changes could be in store for Halo Infinite’s multiplayer due to the negative reaction regarding player customization.

While 343’s decision to make Halo Infinite’s multiplayer free-to-play means that the beloved franchise is now accessible to more players than ever before, the push towards microtransactions has left a large number of its dedicated fans disappointed rather than excited. Luckily, the upcoming Halo Infinite Tenrai Event will offer players an opportunity to obtain new cosmetics for their Spartan without the need for a Battle Pass, and could suggest that the studio may still have plenty in store for fans who want to unlock rewards via play.
