Halo Infinite Easter Eggs Make Cortanas Story Sadder

From Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo Infinite, 343’s sci-fi series has never failed to tug on our heartstrings, especially when focusing on the complex relationship between Master Chief and his A.I. assistant, Cortana. With the full release coming on December 8, Microsoft has given a brief demo of Halo Infinite’s campaign to a variety of outlets and content creators earlier last month. This early access demo revealed a ton of new information for the game’s story, showcasing the first few missions.

Toward the beginning of the demo, Master Chief is seen tumbling through low gravity space debris at Warship Gbraakon, clashing into broken-down bits of ships and gently passing through dead UNSC marines. After entering the ship, Master Chief is seen speaking with the Weapon A.I., who is similar to Cortana. She states that the “rogue A.I.” Cortana has been deleted, though neither of the characters knows who deleted her, establishing mystery players may solve in the campaign.

Throughout the campaign preview, Cortana’s voice echoes in Master Chief’s head, which makes it seem pretty clear that the player will be exploring Cortana and her deaths in this campaign. As Master Chief is about to enter the ship, Cortana echoes, “If you knew how you were going to die, how would you live your life differently?” The same quote can be heard in Halo Infinite’s campaign launch trailer. The voice lines are haunting callbacks to the previous games and are truly heartbreaking considering Cortana’s fate in both Halo 4 and Halo 5.

Master Chief’s New Companion Realizes Cortana’s Worst Fear

These whispers eerily continue as Chief and his new Weapon A.I. assistant peruse through Foundation, eventually hearing Cortana say, “They’ll pair you with another AI. Maybe even another Cortana model if Halsey lets them. It won’t be me, you know that, right?” The quote plays as Chief and the Weapon A.I. come into contact with some leftover data of Cortana floating around the station. From Halo 4, this painful voice line is proven to be devastatingly accurate as Weapon is Chief’s new Cortana-style companion in Halo Infinite, and is even the same type of A.I. model.

These quotes that play throughout the mission in the Halo Infinite campaign preview provide a backstory of John-117’s journey to becoming the Master Chief since he was a child, as well as provide a more in-depth look into Cortana and Chief’s relationship. The accumulation of all of this brings about this heartbreaking realization that Cortana’s biggest fear from Halo 4 has truly come true – she has been replaced. All of this shows that the campaign is going to be emotional, and especially so, for those players who had grown attached to Cortana in previous games.

There is definitely more to Cortana and Master Chief’s story that Halo Infinite’s campaign will reveal. Players still don’t know who deleted Cortana’s A.I., what happened on Zeta Halo, why the Banished want to destroy humanity, or even if Cortana is still alive. All of these questions and many more will most likely be answered when players go through the campaign for Halo Infinite.
