In a recent interview with IGN, Halo: Infinite studio head Chris Lee provided some clarity on 343 Industries’ plans for the iconic franchise. Namely, he let everyone know Halo 7 won’t be coming out anytime soon: 343 is looking for Infinite to be “the start of the next ten years for Halo.” It’s been nearly twenty years since the first Halo released, but if this interview and the recently revealed trailer are to be believed, this juggernaut among first-person shooters isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

While the promise of such an enduring life span might make live service seem like an inevitability, 343 doesn’t appear to have taken that direction. The studio has confirmed that the standalone game will evolve as the consoles do, and will be receiving a free raytracing graphics update at some point after launch. What this means for future content updates is anyone’s guess – continued free updates (those that add content, at least, as opposed to graphics overhauls or patches) seem unlikely for the entire 10 year lifespan 343 envisions for Infinite without something else padding them out. However, we’re not opposed to being pleasantly surprised.

If 343 does go the non-service game route with Infinite, it might look something like the similarly space-themed No Man’s Sky, which has received – and continues to receive – major updates to the gameplay at no expense to the player, even four years after release. These expansions add new mechanics, enemies, and regional variety to to the game, so it’s possible that Halo Infinite expansions could involve branching out to other Halo rings as time goes on. 10 years is a long time to spend on just one, after all.

While the interview talked a lot about Infinite’s distant future, we also got to see more of its immediate future during today’s Xbox Games Showcase, and it looks bright. A less linear game design than previous series entries lets players choose the order they want to take on mission objectives in true open world fashion. Master Chief can now zip around on a grappling hook to traverse the rough terrain (or even attack enemies with it). And, of course, the game looks beautiful even before raytracing has been implemented into it.

All this is to say: whatever Halo: Infinite has in store for the next 10 years, we can be sure it will come along with a fantastic base game, well worth sinking hours into even before future content updates.
